The locals are beginning to burn the contents of their recycling bins so air quality has taken a dive.

I wanted to educate the populace along Brighton seafront by playing Omni Trio's Red Rain very loudly as I drove back from Waitrose. windows down, intimidating cycling mask on but you know what? There was no fucker around to be educated.

why would anyone burn their recycling? is it not being picked up anymore? luckily no interruptions of that here, although large plastic manufacturers and their lobbyists have convinced some cities and states to temporarily abandon their plastic bag bans, arguing their disposable bags are safer to use now (since reusable bags would retain virus germs and should be washed after every trip shopping and we're far too lazy to do that).

No, recycling hasn't been collected for about a month. The whole city has passive aggressively parked their wheelie bins and bottle crates in the streets, waiting. Whole place reeks of dolmio.

weird, we've been on lockdown for more than a month yet trash and recycling pickup uninterrupted. the city would be intolerable without it.

I was talking about the shopping addiction at first. How weird it felt to go out with no money or bank card. Just walk with no shopping involved. And that's still there to a degree. Still a sense of walking, being outside, being tied up with a trip to the shops. And what's beyond that horizon of goal oriented behaviour is quite special and beautiful. Just being, like a big hippy, with Venus as bright as she's ever been over a sliver of crescent moon.

shops are slowly opening again here. the "1 euro" shops have now rebranded themselves to "1,10 euro" shops. shameless!

In Dalston in east London there's a 99p shop with a 98p shop just across the road, ruthlessly undercutting them by a whole p.

A stray thought that amused me occurred as follows. I was served in a Sainsbury's petrol station by a middle-aged guy who had a big tattoo down one forearm in Mayan glyphs, and down the other forearm he had a tattoo in runes.

It struck me that this was good forward planning if he ever found himself doing time in a high-security prison in America, because then he's potentially got a foot in the door with either the Mexican cartel dudes or the neo-Nazis.

sadly this business model has not proved sustainable and this shop is no more.

the shop not far from there on balls pond road with a sign proclaiming open 25 hours a day, has also gone under due to this punishing (now home office-approved?) schedule.

This has been touched on I think but I'm actually more sick of the people self righteously complaining online about people flouting lockdown than people flouting lockdown.

I agree in principle but you can see that for some people this is a golden opportunity to wag their fingers in people's faces.
