There was an episode about mushrooms that mimic people on Round The Twist, a rather good and very surreal Aussie kids' TV show from, ooh, musta been about 1990.

Yeah, I remember it fondly. Don't want to look it up in case it doesn't live up to my memory of it.

I remember the recurring theme of Bronson's trainers being so smelly and foetid they'd become organisms in their own right and developed a rudimentary sentience - or something like that, anyway.

I learned recently that, rather than differentiate two types of fried potato product as crisps/chips like we do, or chips/fries like the Yanks, Australians call both kinds "chips", so in order to actually tell one from the other, they call chips/fries "hot chips". Which, when they cool down, presumably become cold hot chips.
