Beyonce's basically a heritage act now though isn't she? None of that Lion King soundtrack stuff really made a dent and she hasn't had a big hit single in years despite all the acclaim and hype over her albums. And Rihanna's more interested in selling make-up than making a record that isn't EDM-lite.

It's funny that these 90s UK R&B records sounded second rate (not just because of the singers), when UKG was regularly pumping out some of the most sumptuous sound design in the world at the same moment.

I mean, Beyonce and Rihanna they're huge names, but they're not huge names because of their contemporary contribution to soul/r&b

remix fodder, really. Like that Kiesza song from a few years back and there were 200 remixes of it depending on which club/scene you followed

Cher Lloyd has quietly been a great pop for a decade! I think she's incredible, the way she just doubles down on everything that people hate about her (ie being working class and unrepentant and eschewing false humility)

if people are going to throw the worst at you, why not make yourself a lightning rod for every criticism imaginable and get it done with in one move?
