I remember well a sophomore year experience at the cafeteria with a senior. "Indie rock died in the 90s, everything since is just a ripoff." "No, there is nothing remotely interesting happening in Funeral."

Indie is probably the least "in" genre among hip New York gentry, presumably because it's semi-mainstream. If you needa distinguish yourself from the plebs, it's your best option. It's all part of the new highbrow sensibility, which can be described as "listens to everything (except indie)."

Bodega isn't a banner carrier of any definition of indie I'd use. There's the indie people refer to when they mean like 2000s indie pop/folk/rock stuff from Shins to Arcade Fire to Beirut. There's the guitar-based indie people talk about that stretched at least back to the 80s, maybe Talking Heads or smthg. And there's like the blanket independent sound of the 2000s/early 2010s that includes Animal Collective and Joanna Newsom. Those are the ways I've heard the term used.

Is Sufjan Stevens indie, or is he a singer songwriter? Casiotone for the painfully alone? I don't even see how Jim O'Rourke comes to be indie, but as far as you are concerned he is.

Not an answer by any means, but indie is such a useless term for a question like this. Asking for recommendations about a music catagory that is so ill defined and much disputed is just asking for a big fat mess.

I'm not sure "indie" means anything real anymore tho it's like calling something "alternative"

listening to alot of similar stuff as of late- genre ambiguous, synth laden, female fronted pop.
