all this talk about how he made an off-hand comment to an interviewer when the tape wasn't running about how the gays should be allowed to live as a family unit means nothing - the act of gay itself will always be a sin and so the LGBT community will never be accepted fully into the church. It's posturing to suggest otherwise in an attempt to bring the church into 2020.
It doesn't bother me - even the most staunch Catholics I know don't have a problem with me, their personal faith and belief systems are up to them and as long as they don't impact me I couldn't give a fuck.

to be fair you probably have 200 years of inter-religious bloody wars to thank for the west getting so sick of christianity and mostly calling it quits. We need another hundred years more bloodshed in the middle east before our lot will.

According to the wiki I just skimmed, Catholicism isn't so much against sodomy/homosexuality as much as it is against any non-procreative sexual act. I knew that they don't like anything non-procreative, but I thought there was an additional thing on top of that which made them anti-gay.
I would guess the origin of this is in promoting social cohesion/order by forbidding lustful acts which will fuck up society?
Or maybe just something to do with the shame that accompanies certain lustful acts? Like, why is it that christians decided wanking was bad when most people have a great time wanking? Is it because wanking leads you to neglecting your duties, perhaps? Or that you feel quite depressed after having a wank, probably doubly so when you're living in the desert and you've got sand in your peehole.
