Lisbon really does have - to me anyway - an astonishing number of huge shopping centres for such a small city, each of them claiming to be the biggest on the "Iberian peninsular" - I dunno why they always say that instead of Portugal and Spain, maybe there are some contenders in Andorra I dunno.

am i the only one repulsed by the lighting in supermarkets? it's especially hard in winter when it's dark outside and you walk inside a supermarket so brightly lit you have to pinch your eyes. i've started wearing sunglasses but this can't be normal can it?

If you work it right you can get a filling multi course meal from the hot bar for like 6 bucks. Also make your way into the BBQ section and buy the discounted stuff (I hope because they made a surplus?), you could get gigantic state fair style turkey legs for a buck. Once I figured that out I was in whole foods all the time. a little put off by the amazon acquisition though

Strange, seems a fairly simple matter to optimize the lighting, and diminish that fluorescent sterility. Calibrating the lighting to more of a warm campfire hue would likely prompt a more comfortable feeling in customers, no? The cool lighting, plus the linoleum, seems to make for an uninviting atmosphere.

There can be another problem with this kind of lighting: it can flicker at a rate that is invisible to your conscious mind but that still affects your noggin. It can be especially bad from LED lights as they can go from 100% bright to 100% dark in a fraction of a second (square wave) whereas older lights will produce more of a sine wave and less of a difference in intensity if they do flicker.

Invisible flicker can lead to headaches, brain fog, dizziness, migraine...it's not something encountered in nature and is correspondingly bad for us.

Sunlight has no flicker.

This pub had it all, Flat pints of bitter and minging piss lagers, pros off Forest Road injecting in the bogs, dealers, wastrels, urchins, casuals, bursting at the seams with drugs. You could order an all day breakfast at 10:30pm. Now it’s a fuckin Sainsbury’s.

The mall is good because of the distinct phases of development it goes through. The ones like the Tricorn, then the first phase of American styles malls eg the Galleria in Hatfield or Brent Cross plus smaller ones like the Exchange in Ilford or Vicarage Field in Barking. Then you had the likes of Bluewater and then most recently Westfield imported from Australia.
