sure i understand that there are a great many scales not available on a piano keyboard, and that playing one of those means i am a tool of western hegemony and basically think slavery is a good idea. i just don't understand how an octave that isn't based on doubling frequency won't sound dissonant. but i should watch the videos like i said so thanks for reminding me.

hahaha. I tend to think dissonance does not exist except for being a subjective value judgment.

Yeah I don't buy that Kyle Gann/Riley thesis. I've heard it before and it seems to have more in common with that 60s zeitgeist than the way in which musics in that region have been considered. Plenty of ridiculously fast tempi when you get into the percussive aspects of monophonic or homophonic musics not based on harmonic counterpoint. If anything, western music is too slow because it has to limit the roll of the drum. There is no real tuning in angloamerican percussion.

this might have subtle dissonances for western ears but sounds perfectly natural to me, not strange at all. in fact a lot of alt rock sounds very unnatural to me.

I wouldn't worry yourself about this stuff woops all you need to ask yourself is is this tune a banger? Everyone's understanding maxes out at a certain level.

I played around with just intonation a little bit when I was in uni, there's scaling vsts you can use but it's a bit clunky. It's not the be all and end all as some people like to make out, you can't change keys in JI and you get "wolf intervals" between certain notes which are very dissonant. Also a lot of claims that barbershop quartets singing in JI are just false afaik.

If you consider gamelan which has tunings specifically designed to create dissonance for the rhythmic beating, what is perfectly "harmonious" isn't really quantifiable in a mathmatical sense imo but cultural in same way a of word or accent sounds nice.

polyphonic melodic counterpoint is the trap tbh.

Well not so much trap as a reason why western music hasn't been able to develop its rhythmic content in the same way. Otherwise in many respects people like Riley are just catching up.

also please share nice frequency ratios, I'm doing an experiment with listening to pure sinus waves 24h per day for the next few days since i'm stuck at home anyway.
what I came up so far is 63/32, 254/255, 27/4, 28/4, 343/16
