sure i understand that there are a great many scales not available on a piano keyboard, and that playing one of those means i am a tool of western hegemony and basically think slavery is a good idea. i just don't understand how an octave that isn't based on doubling frequency won't sound dissonant. but i should watch the videos like i said so thanks for reminding me.no. you can divide semitones into ever more miniscule intervals. usually in middle eastern music you have 24, but some turkish makam practitioners go as far as 72 - but by that point its really unnecessary. Quartertonal is generally sufficient outside of the avant-garde academic ghetto.

this might have subtle dissonances for western ears but sounds perfectly natural to me, not strange at all. in fact a lot of alt rock sounds very unnatural to me.
