I think I'm also inclined to have these feelings about the Beats, many of the hippies, etc—but then I go and hear a top-notch Italian lit scholar talk about the visionary Apollonianism of Morrison, or hear a really informed avant-garde historian talk the incredible influence and innovation of Kerouac, and I wonder to myself whether I don't actually know what the hell I'm talking about—and even if I did, what's the comparative value of a glass half full vs a glass half empty stance? Also Kerouac - an utterly vile writer, the peak dwelling on the existential purpose of life, everything conformist and conservative I despise in literature condensed and sold as revolutionary.
