I once had a shower thought of making a Dissensus Discord, but I figured the only two outcomes were (1) it never gets used (2) it displaces the forum entirely and everyone migrates. Both seemed like bad outcomes.

If we got rid of the "20 seconds between posts" rule it'd make the site a bit more chat-like.

Where'd that rule come from, anyway? There an issue with spammers? Or it just default settings/legacy?

a discord was made for the dissensus raw production thread. we used it to host the listening party. Wektor and I got groovy bot hooked up and queued up gunshot noises over everyone's tracks

The schism will come sooner or later anyway.
I would suggest you make it, though I will mention I did try making one for the Compilation™ release and it did not hold up too well when it comes to activity.

The thing is, this forum's lovely for archival stuff. That you can keep alive threads from 10-15 years ago is incredible. Almost nowhere on the Internet is like this. It's a big part of the reason I like it here. Discord you lose all that. You can only exist in the present. It's a mixed bag.

I'd imagine we can go about storing that data automatically, but I wouldn't know the costs involved in that. It doesn't seem that difficult to program though.

But yeah I'd agree that this forum is considerably superior in that regard.

My experience is - plenty internet forums used to have live chat functionality alongside the usual business and I would not say it killed the forum, it contributes to its vitality, if anything.

imo a channel either undergoes clinical death within a week and if it doesn't it bodes well

It's less storage, more surfacing. Visualization. UI. Keeping found things found.
