There’s a genuine air of menace which is quite rare. Beyond tension. Albert Brooks as a nasty bastard was different, he’s like the chubby brother to Charles Grodin. The motel scene stood out but more than that was the sound flow, interrupting it at well timed, gear changing moments

I would say probably 80% of music i listen to these days is in the car, at least 50% of that time is on the motorway, and as such nearly all music is now appraised on the suitability of it's use in that context

It's wrecked my music "collection" completely but also dont think I've ever listened to more albums in my life

Motorway albums don't tend to work in London traffic though, maybe i need two sticks for different contexts

And I do think, for these purposes, it is possible to single out enough how a given thing is influencing you. If you couldn't do that at all, you wouldn't be able to navigate the world, I'd say.

you could but A) that's a sociopath's way of trying to understand the self and B) if you understand everything about yourself you might aswell be dead

Yeah I do think there is some degree of truth that is lost as we have more time to intellectually refine our opinions.

this is exactly why all even now people will sit through hour long Kanye interviews even if it's on a podcast like Drink Champs where NORE interrupts the guest frequently

The only lens through which something can be polarising now seems to be the culture war. A film is polarising if it's either "problematic" or a bunch of people are upset about it being "woke". There's nothing outside that.

and yet even then what tends to be considered problematic i find is films that at most suggest at something rather than outright state their intent, the way i've seen some people discuss that Licorice Pizza thing you have to wonder how they'd react if they watched something like I Saw the Devil or Singapore Sling
