Excellent comment, absolutely accurate.Drive isn't an Oscars film. It's Nicolas Winding Refn updating Le Samourai and The Driver.
that'll doAlright, mix of wooziness and ultraviolence. Brilliant heist scene. Excellent use of a hammer, juicy have it cunt vibes in the lift (strewth Ruth)

this questionOr is the question, how to account for this lack of a response, which is more fruitful
it doesn't even have to be a masterpiece, there's quite a few films i know people love that's just "what if even dumber and more corny Heat but directed by an ex-marine guy?"Or just watching a supposed masterpiece of cinema and not seeing what the fuss is about

you could but A) that's a sociopath's way of trying to understand the self and B) if you understand everything about yourself you might aswell be deadAnd I do think, for these purposes, it is possible to single out enough how a given thing is influencing you. If you couldn't do that at all, you wouldn't be able to navigate the world, I'd say.
this is exactly why all even now people will sit through hour long Kanye interviews even if it's on a podcast like Drink Champs where NORE interrupts the guest frequentlyYeah I do think there is some degree of truth that is lost as we have more time to intellectually refine our opinions.
and yet even then what tends to be considered problematic i find is films that at most suggest at something rather than outright state their intent, the way i've seen some people discuss that Licorice Pizza thing you have to wonder how they'd react if they watched something like I Saw the Devil or Singapore SlingThe only lens through which something can be polarising now seems to be the culture war. A film is polarising if it's either "problematic" or a bunch of people are upset about it being "woke". There's nothing outside that.
