...When ATCQ - peoples instinctive travels came out in 89 or whatever you practically couldn't give it away. I'd imagine first week sales woulda been in the negative yet that is now a bonafide classic.
where was this ?
it was huge from day 1

I think that's about right...Clipse now are all about the idea of pushing underground weight through mainstream distortion, and I think the figures accurately reflect what they, and the record company behind them, wanted them to do. I think they're pushing a longevity aspect. Which isn't based upon first week sales.
i agreed with most of your post but while crack rap is partly (and in the case of tenacity and aspiration, its more implicit) about those things (things that are basically what 90% of hip hop is about), its also simply about gloating, boasting, and bragging about your prowess as a dealer. its almost like battle rapping but instead of the punchline being about the rapper, its about how great of a dealer they are.really, crack rap is all about tenacity, aspiration and authenticity, whereas taking crack is pretty much about giving up on life and losing all sense of yourself.
gumdrops;68696 as far as clipse selling poorly said:Story/Rumor is that Chad and Pharrell have split up and are dissolving The Neptunes because of creative differences...it hasn't been confirmed or denied yet, though...Oh, and Nas' "Hip Hop Is Dead" leaked early this morning.
One.
I think HUGE is pushing it because I remember hip hop fans bumping it but it not being recognized too much in the mainstream. People that were checking for it (hip hop heads) were already open off of the "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo/Pubic Enemy" single and then "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum" they went out and bought it and the HIP HOP COMMUNITY was buzzing about it. It got some rather dissapointing reviews in major music publications (Rolling Stone) that didn't "get it" and most outsiders (read: White people) weren't up on them until their SECOND album came out....shit, I remember people playing "Peoples Instinctive.." tapes until the words rubbed off!
I can see why black kids turning lou reed on his head in a sample wouldn't have gone down to well with either the white or black music press.
^^^that single was a bit huge, more in part to the vid i would guess though. Still the album according to wiki took 5yrs to go gold. That to me is a sleeper...
...does anyone else think lupe fiasco is more than a bit q tippish ???
The songs that didn't make Nas' new album are available here...
Ok, what is it with Nas using the Iron Butterfly sample again on that track? is he trying some sort of really fucking dumb meta-commentary on hip hop being dead? Is there an interview where he explains it somewhere? It's such a crass dumb move, I wish all of the big rappers would just collectively die in one big helicopter crash.
I coulda made my double LP just by sampling different parts of Nautilus
There are about 20+ interviews where he explains what he meant just FLOATING around in the vast expanse that is cyberspace.
