It was?

where was this ?

it was huge from day 1

I think HUGE is pushing it because I remember hip hop fans bumping it but it not being recognized too much in the mainstream. People that were checking for it (hip hop heads) were already open off of the "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo/Pubic Enemy" single and then "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum" they went out and bought it and the HIP HOP COMMUNITY was buzzing about it. It got some rather dissapointing reviews in major music publications (Rolling Stone) that didn't "get it" and most outsiders (read: White people) weren't up on them until their SECOND album came out....shit, I remember people playing "Peoples Instinctive.." tapes until the words rubbed off!

"Reginald! I disagree!" *drives off*

I think that's about right...Clipse now are all about the idea of pushing underground weight through mainstream distortion, and I think the figures accurately reflect what they, and the record company behind them, wanted them to do. I think they're pushing a longevity aspect. Which isn't based upon first week sales.

Uhh....no. The album was pushed back and the single was released for ONE PURPOSE only...to move units. Not in the slow creeping Gnarls Barkley kinda way, either. They wanted this album to open BIG. This album had been heavily promoted and hyped. It was one of the most anticipated albums of the year (as well as the most delayed) and it was giving glowing reviews by most reputable hip hop publications. When it leaked it was discussed SO MUCH that threads were stickied so that users could discuss it in full. In the end, it was thrashed by the Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana....UGH!

really, crack rap is all about tenacity, aspiration and authenticity, whereas taking crack is pretty much about giving up on life and losing all sense of yourself.
i agreed with most of your post but while crack rap is partly (and in the case of tenacity and aspiration, its more implicit) about those things (things that are basically what 90% of hip hop is about), its also simply about gloating, boasting, and bragging about your prowess as a dealer. its almost like battle rapping but instead of the punchline being about the rapper, its about how great of a dealer they are.

as far as clipse selling poorly, in a way i almost think clipse are TOO lyrically focused for todays hip hop market. never mind that hip hop albums arent selling that much to begin with. i do agree though that the production of the album, apart from a few songs, sounds just like neptunes beats from 2003, and not even the most amazing stuff like on clones, its neptunes by the numbers. interestingly chads name isnt anywhere in the credits. ive heard he did work on the original sessions, so i dont know if his parts got stripped off the album or if pharell simply did do it all himself. i find that hard to believe though, considering how old it sounds.

Story/Rumor is that Chad and Pharrell have split up and are dissolving The Neptunes because of creative differences...it hasn't been confirmed or denied yet, though...Oh, and Nas' "Hip Hop Is Dead" leaked early this morning.

Peoples instinctive travels and ATCQ got slept on a bit or pushed to the side because of all the hoopla surrounding '3 feet high' with the press wanting to promote de la's daisy age and the overt afrocentrism of jungle brothers 'done by the forces'...

...it's abstract jazziness and inventive sampling outside the mainstream also ran counter to the militantcy of PE which was still in full effect. It just didn't fit the hiphop model anywhere and lacked a readily identifiable marketing device. I can see why black kids turning lou reed on his head in a sample wouldn't have gone down to well with either the white or black music press.

probaly if it weren't for the rub off effect from those other 2 native tongue releases it might have just disappeared altogether. Q tip though I've always thought had the best flow of all of the native tongues along with sister monie...

Can I Kick It? reached number 15 in the UK Top 40... I can remember seeing the video during prime time TV and hearing it on nationwide radio.

^^^that single was a bit huge, more in part to the vid i would guess though. Still the album according to wiki took 5yrs to go gold. That to me is a sleeper...

...does anyone else think lupe fiasco is more than a bit q tippish ???

If I could post a list of classic hip hop albums that never went Gold or took a LOOONG time to go Gold you'd be amazed...plus it'd be LONG AS HELL.

I don't see any Q Tip in Lupe at all...people usually focus a lot more on Lupe's delivery, lyrics, subject matter and wordplay more than anything. After hearing joints like "Game Time", Lupe The Killer", "Failure", "The Map" or "Carrerra Lu" I doubt many hip hop heads would see many parallels/similarities between the two emcees.

Huh?

"Across The Tracks" was a Streetsweepers/Kay Slay joint and not an official track slated to be on his scrapped "Nasdaq Dow Jones" LP like "It Wasn't You" and "Death Anniversary" are. He does have even more material on his new Statik Selektah mixtape and his DJ Thoro "Stillatit" mixtape from this past Summer.

With the recent dust ups and comments from several rappers over Nas' choice of an album title "Hip Hop Is Dead", I decided to scrap my old blog idea and write another one. Here it is:

Damn!

Eminem Presents The Reup moved 300,000+ units and entered the charts at #2 behind Ciara. Had Eminem not put his name on it, it wouldn't have sold as well. I recently went to a record store and realized that any CD I wanted to listen to, all I had to do was use my connects and I could either get it for free or find it for download...Sad, really.

I'm starting up my blog soon and it looks like I've locked down a name for it. I'll keep you all posted. Nas' "Hip Hop Is Dead" drops next week. Can't wait for the craziness to start. One.

I write. I stay fly. You know this.

BLLLLLOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.

I wrote a new blog in my weekly AllHipHop.com Poisonous Paragraphs series about how it was to be a hip hop listener during the 2nd Golden Era (1992-96). I called it "The Walkman Days AKA I Let My Tape Rock Until My Tape Popped!", you can read it here:

Ok, what is it with Nas using the Iron Butterfly sample again on that track? is he trying some sort of really fucking dumb meta-commentary on hip hop being dead? Is there an interview where he explains it somewhere? It's such a crass dumb move, I wish all of the big rappers would just collectively die in one big helicopter crash.

There are about 20+ interviews where he explains what he meant just FLOATING around in the vast expanse that is cyberspace. It wasn't a dumb move as most of us hip hop listeners/fanatics from pre 92 have been saying it for YEARS. Skillz ALSO made a song called "Hip Hop Is Dead" this summer.

Will I Am produced it and he flipped the sample DIFFERENTLY than it was used in "Thief's Theme" (the making of the song is also another video floating around the dark and inviting galaxy known as "the web"...it's accessible through this potal called the "Google Bar"). The move wasn't dumb at all in my opinion.

Pardon the sarcasm...I could've been a real jackass given this damning statement given who you're talking to:

I wish all of the big rappers would just collectively die in one big helicopter crash.

Not a good choice of words by ANY stretch of the imagination^

I coulda made my double LP just by sampling different parts of Nautilus

I kinda wish he'd tried.

I found the new album pretty disappointing. He's still such a great MC, but most of the production comes across as so anonymous, especially when it comes to the drums.

I was kinda hoping someone would paraphrase it so I wouldn't have to sift through. And I do! I'm sick of mainstream rap at the moment. i wish David Bowie had died in a car crash in 1979 as well.
