Is disco cancelled?

It is also my impression that disco's stock has never been higher, but like I've commented on this board before, in your 20s it's always hard to tell the difference between "this is trending in the culture!" and "I discovered this in the last five years!"

But I think poptimism + nostalgia + the death of rock has contributed significantly. No one cares about about the rock/disco culture war anymore except crusty pizzacore dudes. And everything sounds better with a couple decades retrospect.

Some great tunes I didn't know here tho DLaurent. Thought I'd been thoroughly hazed by various Craner + Padraig playlists but appears not.

It's no joke. I'm told on another forum (not music related) I'm always looking for blessings and acceptance though, I just know people 'crates' on here go a lot deeper than mine so like to know what people think.

Joking ain't ya?

It's stock has never been higher, in my brain at least

If we include boogie as well it's got a shout as the goat genre, even better than pc music

Like everyone I love disco... or I did until I moved to a place where it gets shoved down your throat constantly all the time. Or sort of, it's not real disco but there is so much disco-ey stuff played, just this annoying kinda pseudo-discoesque tinge that creeps into everything that gets spun in every bar or club or place of any kind you can enter.

I guess it's the weather here - specifically the sun - or something but somehow everyone seems to feel sort of obliged to nod in the direction of summery, sun-kissed, sunlight dappled, sunny disco sounds.

Yeah maybe that. But I just mean that the weather tends to affect what people want to play and what people want to hear, and what people think others want to hear... ultimately what they feel they should play. So it's inevitable that in a place that is ALWAYS sunny, you're gonna hear a lot of sunny music. And you're gonna get sick of it, however good it is - and to circle back to your point, you're right of course, most of what I'm talking about isn't good.

Also of course, Portugal isn't really sunny all the time, it's just people act as though it is. I honestly feel that there has been a secret agreement, some collective decision to pretend winter doesn't happen - for me the clearest evidence of that is the fact that all the houses have no heating despite the fact that for a month or two each year you really do need heating.

In the UK you can have lovely hot days, but sometimes you can have beautiful cold ones, brooding atmospheric grey or crisp winter mornings and so on. But Portugal just feels wrong when it's cold and grey, buildings haven't been designed to look good in the rain. These last few months have been kinda miserable, it's not that it's been cold - it's not rained or anything like that, if you had this weather in the UK you'd be talking about what a lovely mild winter it was, but for me, and not just me, it feels wrong. I've spoken to taxi drivers who said the exact same thing, Portugal just isn't the real Portugal when it's not hot.

This year, though mild, winter seems to have dragged on, I can't wait for it to end I feel like I'm marking time in a sort of nowhere place just now. Although it was 21 today, Liza went to the beach and swam in the sea... perhaps the end is in sight.

So no disco isn't cancelled.

Well, its a lot like "balearic" music isnt it. In principle, it's great, but then you actually have to listen to it and it's like being stuck in a lift in House of Fraser

That said we are going to Mallorca in the summer and i think that island may have the worst radio stations of all time, would welcome balearic with open arms instead of that weird soft rock station that just plays Bon Jovi on loop

The thing with disco/boogie is I can't believe how much good stuff there is, I keep discovering new amazing tunes. I thought I'd heard all the best stuff, like a fool, cos I'd heard Chic and Sister Sledge etc.

An awful lot of very boring music as well

nah, disco is just phillie soul descendent. Not like balearic at all! which owes more to 80s pop.

What's the correlation between Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, or Gloria Gayner with William Pitt and Mandy Smith? I can't see it.
