when i was growing up 'attitude' was a big thing. no one has an attitude now. the posture of defiance disappears when everyone acknowledges that we are all playing the same game in the same space. there is other game. there is no resistance to the game. there are no other spaces to hide in and plot from.

I've seen people talk about the concept of 'selling out' not really being a thing anymore. Nobody cares. If you can monetise something, you do.

two different things, though. selling out is changing what's done from good/innovative/interesting/niche to mainstream/lowest common denominator/pandering to what a mass audience wants. monetizing is taking what's being done and blowing it up to a larger audience, but not compromising on the essence and quality.

Nirvana blew up but they didn't sell out. They maintained their same sound (even got harsher sounding on the third album), but just offered it up on a major label with marketing muscle instead of Sub Pop.
