There's a variant allegedly out of Russia that's a bit madder called 'Drift Phonk' that's blown up on TikTok with clips of people drifting cars.

They're probably aware of it, but nah, don't think so. There's a Wiki page that says SpaceGhostPurrp coined the term and over the years it's developed in a few directions.

It perhaps could have gone in 'chillwave continuum'. There's clearly some overlap with vaporwave and that sort of thing. You can see it in the artwork alone. Moody purple. Anime. Night drives.

The way the synth sits, or doesn't sit, in the mix on that tune is like the one Greens posted the other day, so I guess it's a stylistic choice and not just poor mixing.
