Went to the national gallery on my birthday with my family and saw many wonderful things including a painting by an artist I've never paid much attention to—Andrea Mantegna.

Also saw a Velasquez I've never seen hanging in the NG before—apparently could be a fragment of a larger portrait painting. Anyway, the uncanny presence of the Archbishop's face, plus that (also uncanny) sense of slight blurring in the features that Velasquez creates (I know he painted sometimes with a long brush, perhaps this explains it? Or the use of a camera obscura?)

Just stumbled across this bloke, Vladimir Veličković. Reminds of Bacon and Steadman. Not sure they're all paintings, some look like illustrations.
