I think you're right I Had A King is the strongest as a song, as lyrics.

And that Michael From Mountains is a little underwhelming.

I think the voice-as-instrument thing is best on Night In the City. And that Cactus Tree is her barest statement of persona, psychology, the problems of conflicting desires that follow her in her whole career.

I do really love the album cover in person, the LP. The way the birds are skywriting. All the flowing swirling spiral layers. Have you taken a look at other drawings and paintings she's done? Wonder if you'd like
outside of the paintings on her records im not familiar.... should have a thread for musicians or non painters that do paint.... bob, mc ride, joni, likely more

How does the simplicity of her guitarwork and her emphasis on voice-as-instrument compare to stripped down early Dylan records ya reckon?
well they really are the opposites.... but i think was underrated as a guitar player on times changing and another side, compared to the first two albums... he was operating on the "folk" and rock sound that were in his roots.... its tough to discuss what mitchell is doing with the guitar, because on this album her voice is so overpowering, and it doesnt appear to me that shes purposefully doing this to overshadow however she thinks her guitar playing is....

with dylan, the guitar and voice play into the topicalness of his songs, while with Mitchell, her voice is enough to evoke any emotion needed regardless of what she is doing with the guitar

i've been listening to this song a lot recently, the guitar tune is so haunting, obviously helps with the lyrics its paired with, but this is also a much different field of music than mitchell....theyre operating differently, but both artists show in their early records how capable and amazing they are at expressing the moods standing up there with just a guitar.....

When he sings "picks up my scent on his fingers / while hes watching the waitress's legs" he's going to hold up two sticky fingers to the camera. And he'll have a womans fresh musk on them.
