Ancient Egypt's running through both Alien/Prometheus and Blade Runner. Pyramids and hieroglyphs all over the place.

Giger did a mural showing the egg-facehugger-xenomorph sequence based on the Egyptian sky goddess, Nut.

It was a black and hooded head; and hanging there in the midst of so intense a calm, it seemed the Sphynx's in the desert. "Speak, thou vast and venerable head," muttered Ahab, "which, though ungarnished with a beard, yet here and there lookest hoary with mosses; speak, mighty head, and tell us the secret thing that is in thee. Of all divers, thou hast dived the deepest. That head upon which the upper sun now gleams, has moved amid this world's foundations. Where unrecorded names and navies rust, and untold hopes and anchors rot; where in her murderous hold this frigate earth is ballasted with bones of millions of the drowned; there, in that awful water-land, there was thy most familiar home. Thou hast been where bell or diver never went; hast slept by many a sailor's side, where sleepless mothers would give their lives to lay them down. Thou saw'st the locked lovers when leaping from their flaming ship; heart to heart they sank beneath the exulting wave; true to each other, when heaven seemed false to them. Thou saw'st the murdered mate when tossed by pirates from the midnight deck; for hours he fell into the deeper midnight of the insatiate maw; and his murderers still sailed on unharmed- while swift lightnings shivered the neighboring ship that would have borne a righteous husband to outstretched, longing arms. O head! thou has seen enough to split the planets and make an infidel of Abraham, and not one syllable is thine!"

Moby-Dick, CHAPTER 70 - The Sphynx

Let's Talk About Ceps
As chance would have it, I stumbled across this yesterday:

I wonder what the tune is based on. An Arab friend of mine said he thought it sounded like an Eastern Orthodox hymn, which makes some kind of sense given that Coptic, which is still used as the liturgical language of the Coptic Church in Egypt today, is derived from Ancient Egyptian.

I love 1920s-30s modernist/futurist architecture that tips its hat to all the archaeological discoveries being made in Egypt and Iraq at the time.

There's a lot in Iain Sinclair's book, Lud Heat, about Hawksmoor's interest in ancient Egypt.

Yeah, it's so ancient that even the history of people being fascinated with it is ancient. The Romans were obsessed, and there was a mediaeval Arab polymath who made a pretty good go at translating hieroglyphics centuries before Champollion.

3 to 4 millennia in development, avoided at college because it had all essentially been ‘done’

its god pantheon remains a draw for scholars and devotees for one element of attraction, personally it can be its material innovations and faience is the most stunning (outside of monumental design)

faience is where ceramics and glass work meet and produces an endlessly interesting hue-range of specific blues (cobalt-y and easily confused with copper oxide), an intersectional material often both semi-transparent and opaque

tons of small art works incorporated it, from personal adornments to living quarters features, “Egyptian Blue” is everywhere in dynastic living only because of faience’s unique properties when fired by master crafts workers

"... even the most avid enthusiasts of buggery, whether heterosexual or homosexual, may flinch at confronting Mailer’s narrative exuberance in heaping up sodomistic rapes... "

"... I don’t intend to give an elaborate plot summary, since if you read Ancient Evenings for the story, you will hang yourself."

Sounds a bit like a certain novel known to @IdleRich, by Bill Drummond and 'Zodiac Mindwarp.'
