It can be incredibly lazy if used poorly with a warbling diva but can blind you with harmonics and deftness of touches if the chords are on point and any drum programming is nuanced
I never realised how much of this stuff there is.
90-94 peak years surely? Masses .. Jersey 100%, tons of defunct small run and world renowned NY labels, all the way through to Europe - Brits went hard at it hard. Fuck, going to have dig hard it’s just full on at work and skiving isn’t an option
It’s a fine line. Rhodes keys have been done to death. Moog solos in house offer similar gold and toilet standards. 90-94 peak period stateside and Italy (organs as opposed to pianos). Certain mates scoff at such sounds claiming organ lines made house less strange/experimental and they have a point. Keep in mind the same people can drone for an hour over finger-click snares on labels that put out about 4 releases only they’ve ever heard of, or male vocals cut and layered without going full preacher man
praise His naaamr (Jersey again). Timmy Regisford at Shelter was one epiphany to organs but that’s a way back in the long ago where drugs may have warped perception
Flying Records used to sell Italian organ-y imports for taking the piss prices. Dean Thatcher et al. Got caned to oblivion so it devolved quite quickly into generics. Cue tags like ‘jazzy’ to justify a bit of musicianship yet jazz is def one term applicable to Chicago’s nuanced later wave producers eg Glenn Underground/SJU). People like Gemini added harder elements too but had a mass of grace and swing. Without detouring into the “what ever happened to Gemini?” mythos, add Boo Williams whose health is all over the place currently
Massive array of options, have no idea how to condense it. Played out, the right organ track at just about the right hour can levitate listeners. Venus was a superb night for Italian organ tunes, Paul Wain, Christian Woodyatt and DiY a maniacal circus but selectors with trustworthy ears could always bring an intimacy with organ tracks. Even techno bods like Justin Berkovi have rolled out a production intersectional to all the above. Add Black Coffee pre/proto amapiano before it lifted off outside of South Africa
It can be too much as a mix as in every track is organ based but such a statement could be just as easily undermined with a well researched tracklist to leave an indelible imprint
Logged in trying to think of Balearic Death contenders = too much tune (never a problem)
