The shiny people

Unsuccessful people stay hungry. What's so weird about Dylan is that he kept changing and growing despite mega success at his first persona. Usually people are satisfied

He had the wisdom to do it his own way. You don't really see that anymore. Everyone is trying to please as many people as possible now. Barely any risk takers

It's also what usually leads to their downfall. They can't deviate from brand can't show indecision weakness. No ability to adapt so as to stay on top. This leads to an extreme behavioral conservatism, a loss of freedom even as they're showered with every reward they once thought they wanted.

I was talking mostly about the types of people you see play acting bohemian lifestyles in NYC, and fancy Europeans on fancy holidays in expensive resorts n such. People who have big boats n all that shit. Their existence is generally pretty smooth unless something fucks it up but they generally have plenty of safeguards and several pokers in several fires to protect in case one falls through. Def not an existence I would ever aspire to. The older I get the more repulsive that world looks to me. Celebs and the rest of it. Success even. I'd never want to reach it. Not wealth wise. It's corrosive. Root of all evil. Even just having money to throw around. Rots you from the inside out

What's the deal with Scott Walker? I enjoy his music but it sounds fairly conventional to me half the time, at least Scott 4 which I'm most familiar with. Am I missing his really strange records, or misunderstanding? Know nothing about his life

The early Christians got a lot right. I think of their cities of sin often.

there's a financial bed to it as well. pj harvey doing whatever she wants vs tricky still trying to make something that sells.

musicians end up making financial choices. dizzee being the best example of someone who made one massive album, a follow-up where he's grappling with exiting his class, and then years where he's 100% clearly decided that he's going to treat it all as a career and make as much money as possible

people get a bit of money and want to protect what they've got

Yes this is what's so strange to me

Half the things people say they'd do, if they ever got money, they could do right now without it

And the other half, once they get the money they want to protect it, they're always grasping for more

This is something Gosford Park got right I think, between upstairs downstairs. The help has a freedom their masters lack, which is a freedom from constantly grasping. All the wealthy ones are constantly anxious about holding on or getting more. They throw tempertantums over changes in numbers printed on pieces of paper.

The money world is a bullshit world and the price they pay is they all have to play along. Especially now with the likes of Elon at the country club. Not what it used to be. Just last night when thinking about COVID times I had a chuckle at various celebs posting on IG from their mansions about how it was this great equalizer

his later work is pretty uncompromising - for example, from 2006

It was always like that people have complained about new money since money existed

Yeah but they didn't have spotty crypto teens running around the golf course with super soakers saying things like no cap and nice drip. Certain standards are being lowered to accommodate the new new money. Culture's brow keeps on lowering. And yeah it was always gauche, but the internet changed things in new ways

They won't let me board this flight because my passport is in my checked bag. I am watching them load my checked bag saying, There it is just unzip that pocket they say we can't do that. So they're pulling it off for the luggage belt and now I get to sleep in the airport tonight waiting for the next flight which I have to pay for. Lovely day. Love making tiny understandable mistakes a person could easily fix but bureaucracy says No everyone must suffer, the law is unbendable
