i had never heard of this before!!! seems like i should have... (like the Mark E Smith and Mouse on Mars collaboration)

In a breathtaking discovery, scientists working on a remote Indonesian island say they have uncovered the bones of a human dwarf species marooned for eons while modern man rapidly colonized the rest of the planet.

One tiny specimen, an adult female measuring about 3 feet tall, is described as "the most extreme" figure to be included in the extended human family. Certainly, she is the shortest.

was this the same as the discovery of huge rodents and miniature elephants, with the suggestion that they all got stranded on an island and evolved differently to their more familiar cousins due to site-specific conditions there?

Wasn't this all over the papers a year or two ago? They were popularly called 'hobbits' at the time.
Unless these guys really are dwarfs/dwarves: stocky, belligerent, bearded, tendency to sing about gold...

I understand that as a general rule, in an isolated island environment larger species tend to get smaller and smaller ones get larger. When this was in the news last year there was speculation that this was the first example of this occuring in humans - however I think that the final consensus of opinion seemed to be that this was actually either a child or a deformed member of the normal human race.
