this administration's "negotiating" technique will be something along the lines of:
1) propose/try to enact something that's totally bat-shit crazy,
2) face outrage from the public, all democrats and many republicans,
3) walk back the totally bat-shit measure, replace it with something that's "only" moderately crazy,
4) have everyone say "whew, we dodged a bullet there by getting them to pull back that totally bat-shit crazy action, this revised one is better than that previous one, ok then."

all the while throwing out distractions like bannon telling the media to shut up, conway's alternative facts, etc.

it's all a shell game.

I dont think so. Trump craves approval and is only interested in pleasing his base, so everything is performative, a grand statement. The people advising him are desperate to grab as much as they can and as far as Bannon is concerned this is an opportunity to bring the white race back to its days of glory.

This is a total mess. There is no grand strategy, just a narcissistic clown surrounded by a cadre of deluded psychopaths. He has called this shit down on his own head, seemingly without a way to gain advantage, and, like the Mexico tax nonsense, it seems there is no plan.

Good article about his strategy (or lack thereof) here:

The counterargument would be that he has managed to keep the policies that clearly betray his base (financial deregulation, tax, etc.) out of the limelight. Not a particularly grand strategy, but a strategy nonetheless.

So far, he is keeping his promises (or make it appear that way at least) - as questionable as they are - which is surprising to me.

Fucking BBC. Newsreader on Radio 3 this morning said "over 9,000 people" had signed the petition to deny Trump a state visit. Damn right they have - the signature tally passed half a million as I was signing it yesterday!

Pretty sure he missed out the crucial word "hundred".

At least Corbyn has woken the fuck up and is actually doing something that opposes the government.

I signed the petition and shared it, but it does seem sadly futile to me. A MILLION people could sign it, and they could easily say it was still a minority viewpoint.

edit: Oh a million people almost have.

PM Theresa May announced the visit during her recent US trip. Downing Street has rejected calls for it to be cancelled as a "populist gesture".
UNLIKE HOLDING A REFERENDUM ON LEAVING THE EU, WHICH WAS IN NO WAY A POPULIST GESTURE, OH NO.

How do we see this playing out? Four years of protests and quasi/actual fascism? Or popular revolution and Trump and Bannon strung up from lamposts?

I think its going to escalate very quickly. If it keeps up like this he's in danger of bringing down the whole system. He's a real threat to the entire political and economic order. Which is why I assume even the Koch brothers have come out against the Muslim ban. The obvious parallel is the Vietnam protest, but this could easily turn into mass action ala Eugene debs.

Trump will not back down and the protest will increase, it will on hinge on what happens when he sends the cops/troops in with orders to shoot.
