Hipsters, in hindsight.

hipsterism wsa looking at the failure of dubstep and going "maybe i just didn't do ENOUGH homework!". it's the same failed mentality. but now it's so neurotic it's not even producing anything. just waiting. "maybe once i've listened to every single b side from the obscure 70's ethopian jazz funk label then i'll finally crack the code. i'll be able to say "bow bow" just like waka". he won't...

As a White Man musician what is your escape from this trap then?

in maybe 2012 i invented uk drill drums. that came from a scholarly place of 'lets combin 808-ish drums with jungle-dancehall hybrid rhythms'. the cruel irony is if i'd finished those tracks (i didn't) in a similarly derivative fashoin i would have missed the mark. the last thing i would have thought to do would be to add classical-type piano. that would have been far too white! but if i had, i may well be carns hill and he may well be on here talking to you.

as far as playing the drums my style is an unintentional hybrid of stuff like dancehall, drill and dancehall with more white things like keith moon, elvin jones and tony williams. in other words it's unintentional hipsterism.

THE GRAND THEORY:

White Anglo-American civilisation coped with the civil rights movement and Windrush because:

1) rock music was a legitimate white cultural identity

2) there were white artists who were able to successfully appropriate blackness (elvis, jagger, dj hype, danny weed, kc of the sunshine band, eminem, timberlake, dem 2, michael jackson)

rock music died in the early 90's. white people stopped being able to be black in the last 10 years.

now you either have hipsters who don't produce any culture (they only consume it) and ed sheeran which is really embarrassing.

that's why we now have trump and brexit

There's two separate ideas in this thread.

The first is my sense of the hipster as a reassertion of class identity and class stratification in the wake of a relative dissolution of those identities and boundaries

The other is bartys sense of the alt-right being product of the need for Whiteness to express itself as such, a need which was supplied previously and more benevolently, as Rock.

Both ideas only half formed and susceptible to attack but both at least half true and worthy of discussion
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

Hipsters and Music Journalists are evil twins.

Both are usually non-musicians (or lapsed ones).
Both declare what's "cool" to the non-knowing proles, often in a condescending way.
Both are always on the hunt for the "relevant", the "next big thing" without actually creating it by themselves, or without any loyalty to it.

Popcultural parasites.

Among the music journalists there are exceptions - the blissblogger one of them - who are genuinly interested.

But then, as pop culture evaporates continuously, they (the smug ones) are less and less "relevant" themselves.

One quintessential hipster move is to invest in the gourmet, upmarket version.
You see this with gentrified burgers and fried chicken, you see it with hand stitched japanese hoodies and the whole fashion end of 'streetwear' and of course you see it in post dubstep.

to translate (to the extent that i've grasped the concept). the 90's saw a cultural melting pot; true integration of race and class. to think in garage, you had lee fagan, that bloke from so solid who killed his bird and mighty mo all in the same scene. hipsterism is about recovering and reasserting a broader middle class identity.

I'm not quite sure what you are implying here, but if it is the idea that Mighty Mo is a common or garden cockney then it's wrong- I think his parents are from Afghanistan or somewhere else in Central Asia.

did young people became more beautiful the last 15/20 years? everybody is looking so sharp, no more funny teeth or neglected moustache, hair always in style.

Yes, by the feedback loops of selfies and self presentation and tagged photographs and the visual eye oppression of facebook and instagram

try and go in one of those coffee places. the girls all perfect body, fitness style, guys tall and muscled, laser-cut beard, the hair shining, the skin nice and moisturized. no pimples, no weird hairs sticking out somewhere, no lanky silhouettes or flappy ears. cloud of good smell all around them. beautiful teeth, stunning noses.

Higher grooming standards, ease of access to treatments, scientific and technological advances, higher living standards, greater knowledge/awareness of things like diet, exercise, sleep and exposure to the sun coupled with intensive marketing making sure that people are aware of and feel that they need to make full use of these things.
