The 2010s were also the decade the "Californian Ideology" finally became the dystopia it probably always secretely was anyways - Prime example: social media enabling the powershift to figures like Trump, Bolsonario, Brexit and others.

The ascent of Africa.

The highest growth rates in the world. Huge Chinese investment. Soft power developing rapidly in places like London and Jamaica.

A continent to be reckoned with and this is only the beginning.

Carly Rae Jepsen- Call Me Maybe (2012)

My sister once brought a chap called Jamie (who I assume was a potential love interest of hers) to a family dinner. Being the tactful young man I am, I was sensitive to the fact that it might have been an awkward and uncomfortable situation for the two of them so I decided to help out by mercilessly and unrelentingly teasing him for the entirety of the evening much to the amusement of my wonderful mother and her boyfriend. The events culminated with me doing a strip tease* to this song for him while singing the lyrics “hey I just met you and this is crazy, but here’s my number, so call me Jamie”.

I never saw him again.

* I did keep my boxers on. I’m not a heathen.

Stickz & MDargg- Lightwork (2012)

Setting fire to a stolen moped in a patch of isolated waste ground. Crackling flames. Shrapnel metal contorting in the heat.

A gaggle of masked men circularly assembled watching. It’s almost ritualistic.

An offering not to some pagan god, but to nihilism itself.

Rix, Spar & LiL T - Nothin But Work (2012)

Assad's aerial bombardment.

A screaming toddler being franticly yanked from a collapsed building as panicked men scream in Arabic trying to coordinate one another. Crimson red blood from the child's head wound clumps together with the pastel grey brick dust that's powdered her.

Iyanya- Ur Waist (2012)

Afrobeats foreshadowed what happened in rap a few years later. It’s call and response melodies were a cruder form of rap’s rhythmic fragmentation. But more than that is was the dissolving vocals. Neon melodies melting like terminator liquid metal. A verbal witches brew.

Save- Jimmy Saville (2012)

The British working class is completely and utterly preoccupied with pedophilia. ‘Nonce hunting’- filming the entrapment of pedophiles to post on social media- is a national pastime in this country (Josef K’s now infamous ‘Goblin Nonce’ moniker came from one such video as it happens).

I’ve never received more texts in my life than when the revelations about Saville came out. All my Millwall mates were just bombarding me with messages that teetered the boundary between outrage and elation. For many it was near-eschatological. They were behaving as though it was the second coming of Christ.

People point to many things that led to the current distrust of the establishment in the UK. The dodgy dossier. The expenses scandal. The bank bailouts. Operation Yewtree is a neglected part of this narrative. To have our national treasures systematically revealed to be pedophiles one by one has to do something to our collective psychological character. The bloke who sung ‘Tie Me Kangeroo Down, Sport’, did a portrait of the queen and hosted Animal Rescue was a literal pedophile.

I will for the rest of my life be grateful that nothing was said about the Chuckle Brothers.

Terry G was the first harlequin jinn of the decade. Mind rupturing, frothing rabies wails, phonetic splatter…

Adaptive cognition in the age of frantic, disparate stimulation streams.

The noise/techno crossover.

'Outsider house' and the gradual deconstruction of house until a bunch of people just ended up making ambient (Huerco S., Anthony Naples, Terekke etc).

Ambient in general.

'Deconstructed club'.

The solid, but fairly pedestrian return of Richard D. James.

Autechre's ongoing transformation into The Machine.

2010s was the decade London lost its distinct identity. It may well create another, new one in the coming decade, out of its new and more various components. But that remains to be seen. Rinse FM pop looked back on past glories. High end pastiche. Expertly professional.
