weirdly SImons son has done just that
Genre-hybrids, gender-oscillating vocals and meme-infested themes—this might be the zeitgeist of our near future.

yeah his son is a really good music writer. they have a similar ability to map a chaotic landscape and pitch their conclusions to uninvolved readers.
i do think there's more to be said about
how the internet influences this stuff, beyond just pointing to a few popular websites. there's presumably not a huge overlap between kids who grew up on instagram and kids who grew up on 4chan. different meme cultures and, you'd expect, different aesthetic sensibilities.
and fucking reddit, i don't think a single cool artist has ever been forged there.
the frustrating thing about reddit is how uncreative it is given all the nerd energy. twitter, tumblr, and even 4chan have way more interesting artists. people on reddit are mostly slavish, common sense-abiding imitators. their idea of creativity is to turn a three year old meme into a card game (with exactly the same jokes that were made at the time).
and i say that as someone who's spent a lot of time on the site.
