I think it's either something to do with a conflation between ass as in small donkey or the melvil Dewey related movement where they tried to simplify English eg color not colour, catalog not catalogue. But that one does not explain its (arse) use by James Baldwin in 'another country'

Etymonline has greek "orros", meaning lower spine/rump, for arse, and greek "onos", meaning anus, for ass. Not sure if those help make any distinction.

edit: haven't looked into either before.
