Are you a Rasta?

When Sizzla sings something about jah he's got more conviction in his voice than you'll find in anything a pop star or even rock star ever sings.

Leads me to think about irony - irony is the water we swim in.

That's what I was getting at partly I think. I can't understand most of the posts I made last night, I'm squinting at them, trying to decipher them, and failing. Must have been drunker than I realised.

Rasta is like a cuddly cartoon muppet version of actual rastafarianism isnt it, superficial style via bombarley and general enthusiasm for reggae ganja vibes. It's a style - lots of African lads get into it wthout taking on the religious aspects which are only really viable if you are Jamaican. I met Ethiopian Rastas for example & i think if you can accept that caricature definition we are all rasta

I remember version (i think) saying he thought american R&B was all posturing and insincere, which might be true but I think the style comes from a Churchy culture. I'm thinking of crooning R&B, Usher on his knees masked with tears begging for a blowjob. It's the secular version of pleading to God to absolve you for getting a blowjob.

It's funny though cos sincerity is often something i find embarrassing in music - in white music, specifically. Like I think of Creed or something, or Pearl Jam - very sincere men groaning about their feelings.

Once again maybe it's something that insecure whiteys like me are only comfortable outsourcing to black people.

Or maybe it's that the sincere spirit of the eurowhites is melancholy and self-pitying, like Radiohead.

This is white gospel music.

And actually, because he's singing about JESUS, it's laughable but less laughable than some guy in a jean vest groaning about how nobody understands him.

The Sick Soul of Europe.

I think we've discussed before the religiosity of Todd Edwards music.

The joyous spirit of Christ the child that's in it – could an atheist ever have invented music like that?

The singer of Creed's had a terrible life. He's been arrested loads. Keeps getting done for assaulting people, drugs, drink driving etc. Tried to kill himself at least once.

I think that's a really interesting point because you were talking about conviction at the top of this page and then that morphed into sincerity. And I agree that sincerity can be an awful awful thing, but conviction is something white people can do erm convincingly.

Like maybe some people find anarchist punk stuff cringey but I find a man bellowing about how we're all gonna die in a nuclear holocaust unless I do something quite compelling if done right.

Maybe it's that credibility gap - I think the sensitive man schtick is pretty corny and a fairly transparent attempt to get laid by showing your sensitive side. Conviction is maybe harder to fake I dunno...
