Painting

Another thing to consider is that the abstract guys are gotten in mass. Its hard to relay the story with one painting when often whats going on is simple abuse of a few mechanics. I often don't 'get it' with these types unless I see quite a few of them all in a room together, though maybe thats just stockholm syndrome.

It's tricky isn't it cos there ARE cases where you have to try hard to understand a book or painting or film and ultimately it rewards you.

But at the same time there's the risk of wasting your time trying to "get" something that isn't worth it.

We need Jenks to give us a full throated defence of Richter.

Seeing this while I shovel breakfast down before work - I don’t really have the time to mount the defence. As said elsewhere they don’t work in reproduction so well and I think that when I have got most out of him is when there’s a series/group of his all together. The big retrospective in the Tate about ten years ago - I ended up going three times because I felt there was so much to see and think about. He’s got a series of distinct styles and is bouncing between abstraction and representation a lot. The Baader Meinhof pics struck a chord but maybe because I’m old enough to remember them in the news.
As with all these things I’m not in the business of trying to convince - it seems no one ever changes their mind on here. Recently it’s got quite depressing.

I don't really need "convincing", actually, I'd just like to know what you like about him.

It's easy to shit on things, after all. That's why it's the common currency of the internet.

This is not going to be a popular reply, but I feel much the same way as Jenks. For some reason, either cultural, technological or perhaps because of membership the dialogues here are very reductive and flat - perhaps this an inherent characteristic or fate of online platforms.

The reading thread seldom moves beyond 'is it good?' or 'is it bad?' The forum is increasingly mired in simplistic narrative: the calls for yea or nay, the combative 'convince me', arms folded, the apathetic sarcastic responses offered by some. It is operating at Twitter level. Count the characters.

And, for me at least, after putting in the effort to be generous and type out thoughts on a topic, the posts get shot down as elitist or snooty.

If you expect dialogue and articulated opinion on subjects like painting, politics and literature you're going to have to build an environment that is conducive for those responses and move beyond the immediate clicky-clique mode of YES/NO/LIKE.

I change my mind. I went from asking whether Prince was actually a bit shit to loving Prince after we discussed him at length on here.

Ok. Good. But the reason I let my irritation get the better of me is I get very aggravated when people treat dissensus as some thing to be consumed as opposed to something to be shaped

So if you are not actively trying to push it in the direction you wish to see it go I've got no time for whinging

Yes, most of the time it operates at a low energy base but that's because no one can be inspired every moment of every day. We all contribute what we feel we can at any given time. And often it feels like a mugs game, but it's up to all of us. It's not someone else's responsibility.

I knew it was a cunty thing to say but pull it in your direction, be a flag to rally round or you have no right to an opinion.

I don't like this thing of oh you have to entertain me in the way I wish to be entertained. We work with the energies available

We get sapped by life and work like everybody does drained to the core and still turn up and try and facilitate something. It's not as good as it could but it's pretty good and the potential is there when anyone feels inspired. But if the inspiration isn't there we spin our wheels. We do our best and try and keep the space available for the breakthrough

I don't want to hear university opinions and have to talk university talk. That's not the purpose of dissensus, it's a rabidly anti intellectual forum thank the Lord
