Saw him at Northside Fest at McCarren Park years ago. Had a press pass so got pretty up close and personal. Sad news but of course, in some sense he died a long time ago.

His late 60s run the stuff of legends. Slide doors and Bedouin tents and Steinways in sand.

> One night we all went up to Brian Wilson’s Babylonian house in Bel-Air. Brian then had in his study an Arabian tent made of crimson and purple Persian brocade. It was like being inside the pillow of a shah. There was one light, fashioned from a parking meter. You had to put pennies in it to make it stay on. Brian brought in an oil lamp and tried to light it. The parking-meter light kept going out and Brian kept dropping the oil lamp and stumbling over it. Neither he nor Pynchon said anything to each other.

Peak BBoys tracks (not sure which are BW-led, and records are messy) have to include

Don't Worry Baby
I Know There's An Answer (which I believe BW originally wanted to title Hang On To Your Ego)
I Just Wasn't Made....
Heroes & Villains
Disney Girls
All I Wanna Do
Surf's Up
Sail On Sailor
Help Me Rhonda

Besides obvious hits like Sloop JB, God Only Knows, Good Vibes, Wouldn't It Be Nice

> Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys estimates that he’s heard “Be My Baby,” by the Ronettes, more than 1,000 times. The very first listen, 50 years ago this month, still haunts him.

> "I was driving and I had to pull over to the side of the road — it blew my mind,” Mr. Wilson said, repeating a story that has become something of a legend. “It was a shock.” Just 21 and already frustrated with his band’s basic surf music, he bought the single and set about deconstructing its arrangement and production.

One of my mates in school was obsessed with this tune.

I had a very short Beach Boys phase, think it was when I was reading about a lot of 70s music writing (lester bangs, nick kent, ian macdonald)

Can't say I listen to them much but I could definitely understand the fuss over 'Pet Sounds'. I think 'God Only Knows' is one of the best songs ever (shocking innovative opinion, I know).

Also love that 'Feel Flows' song Version posted, it was on the 'Almost Famous' soundtrack which was (in true pre-internet world fashion) my introduction to a lot of that 70s music.

The other beach boys song I knew was 'Sloop John B' cos it was on the Forrest Gump soundtrack, another revelatory artefact for young corpsey

Hes been dead years hasnt he?

Lol that was my first thought as well tbh.

Never get the urge to listen to them anymore, and there's a lot of overplayed tunes, but I basically like most of the early hits, Today is a pretty good album, Pets Sounds obviously. A lot of people rate Surfs up and the Smile material, but nah. Don't really rate anything after good vibrations.

I can totally understand why a lot of people hate them, but not me.
