    Amy Amy Amy

what i wonder is how much of her pain was really there to begin with or did she love billie holiday and that generation of tragic heroines so much she wanted to destroy herself in order to simulate some of that suffering she thought would bring her closer to their greatness, and maybe once she...

    Amy Amy Amy

saw the docu on ch4 last night which altho i knew blake was the inspiration for back to black just made me think a) he was a complete cunt b) she must have been seriously fucked in the head to have fallen that hard and to basically do whatever he told her to do (like take all the drugs he said...

yeah much as i do actually like a fair bit of this stuff listening even to recent oneman sets or the ikonika one i love, some of the records i dont actually know if they are new or old.

yeah you could take it back to indian stomp or whatever, but the blawan tracks do make me go cor (its like) blimey. i am bored of roska using the same sort of dry palette so much but admittedly yeah, someone like wiley, i didnt get bored of him using the same sound bank - just depends...

what are some good recent sets of this stuff? for my money the girl unit and ikonika set on rinse a few weeks back is pretty excellent imo. silo pass is great yeah (if a bit obviously traceable to its influences) but the middle takes it way off course.

unrelated it does seem like blawan has made quite a lot of tracks from the drums on ramadanmans blimey. anyway i thought the main complaint with this stuff wasnt about it being a bit soft but that its not doing much thats that new - that a lot of it is idm-ish tweaks on old styles and sounds...

yeah i think the diff is between striving too hard to be emotional and merely just being it (which is where i place those early chicago records - they were def emotional and sensitive but not self consciously soft). i like ikonika though. i think a fair no of her tracks are a bit overworked with...

a lot of dubstep was soft too this stuff has just removed the darkness and more industrial-y bits of it to go full on softcore

    Bubbling

what else sounds like this stuff? i really want to hear more of it. there must be other techno stuff from europe thats similar or has similar synths. (i have been listening to the anti g album quite a lot). would be great if planet mu did a bubbling house comp.

main thing i think of is that im not sure dance music has ever sounded quite this 'sensitive' or 'delicate' or 'reticient/reserved' etc (im repeating myself i know but this thread does seem to go in circles) while still trying to work on the dancefloor.

News of the World phone hacking scandal

never heard r brookes speak before but she surprisingly came across quite sympathetically (must have had good pr training beforehand), though the complete 'who, me?' amnesia was farcical. lots of sketchy details overall and not enough grilling for specificity. i am a bit bored of all the...

    Mercury Prize 2010

actually i really dont know who will win but i doubt katy b will as that album is not at all 'serious' (even with the dubstep cred it has) ghostpoet is boring as anything so shouldnt win (but might)

    Dark 4x4 and Breakbeat Garage

i think this stuff is some of the best dance music ever its dark/heavy/hard but bouncy/energetic/driving on the dancefloor and this period seems like the most fertile almost, i mean, yeah its 'dark' (and i know you could argue garage before this was even more fertile and varied cos you had...

    classic directors/films you dont get

true. i think the gap between general consensus from film critics and filmgoers (or fans) is often much greater than that between music critics and listeners.

    classic directors/films you dont get

saw tarkovskys solaris last night. was looking forward to it for a while as i liked the soderbergh remake with clooney though thought it was a little too taut/efficient so assumed the original would give it more space to breathe. and it did. to a ridiculous extent. tbh it might have been cos i...
