best building in london?

Cohen House, Chelsea By Erich Mendelsohn, 1934-36, in collaboration with Serge Chermayeff. Conservatory is by Norman Foster at some later date, think it could do without that and all the cars in front.

    best building in london?

more modernist mallarky 66 Frognal, Hampstead, completed 1938, designed by Colin Lucas of Connell, Ward and Lucas. Made of reinforced concrete 'in the extreme idiom of the day'. Nice angular topiary.

    best building in london?

millennium etc. This is the view from my, er, balcony. Look! There's the dome and everything. I dunno what that bloke is doing there! It's not supposed to have any actual people in it.

    Scott Walker

The Drift sounds like the very echo of hell...a cross between Howard Shore's Crash soundtrack played at the wrong speed...and an elderly relative wailing that they want to die. It's also astonishingly beautiful... 'wind blown hair in a windowless room'

    what ails you?

well, I'm sorry to hear that, oliver. I'm sure you're fine - aren't these things more like genetic predispositions anyway? I mean you might need to take up yoga or something, and flick through Vogue less often (ahem) but it'll be ok. I hadn't realised you were only a year old than me - in my...

    best building in london?

yes, westminster station is incredible - I love the fact that mere mortals are made to shuffle through the alien apparatus as if by lucky accident that human beings could slot into the place without being shredded to bits. It's weird and massive and alienating in the best possible way.

more north greenwich! almost forgot - foster's delirious north greenwich station on the jubille (the only tube line you can't commit suicide on! well, not by jumping in front of the train, anyhow). o2, who now own the Dome, laughingly imagine that part of the complex will comprise 'a mix of...

    best building in london?

millennium village although master modernist owen is deeply sceptical about this place (my house!), I'm a big fan - yes, it's like living in a failed vision of someone else's future, but it's also like living in a Ballardian hotel where the toilets have public locks on 'em (they switch from...

trent park, middlesex not one of your sexy modernist efforts, this, but it's where I hang out whilst being harrangued by my supervisor and listen to exciting papers on Levinas. It used to be owned by Philip Sassoon (the cousin of the poet Siegfried Sassoon), who invited Charlie Chaplin to...

DUBSTEP- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

surely the best reason ever for not hanging about! the vibe was really great (and i never say things like that). Would so be up for another night like that - and the idea that all these dissensus people were lurking in the shadows just adds to the fun!

    Burial interview @ Blackdown/Burial album

Enjoyed DMZ too - dancing next to the speakers and getting that physical rush of air from the bass was probably the best bit, as well as hearing Burial played out loud. Was extremely packed and popular - but the crowd were great, happy, mixed, totally agree with k-p and others about that. And...

    The Lovers Thread

I must be a really, really black-hearted person with a small shriveled up heart that looks like a burnt mushroom but of Cornelius's list I can agree only with 'cold beer'! This both shocks and saddens me...music-wise I like lots of unpleasant noisy, punitive, electronic, slutty, pure and cramped...

    Boys or Girls?

The thing about discussion boards that I like gender-wise is that it destroys the myth that it's women who have a tendency to whitter on endlessly about this and that and that men are surly and non-communicative. Does the internet feminise discussion, or are we all now slaves to the regime of...

    Boys or Girls?

I generally don't think that sex difference is particularly interesting. Things like truth, politics, beauty interest me more, if one can say that without getting a slap for being pretentious! On the other hand, in certain things I do (work in a philosophy department in which I am the only...

Londoners - Are you Real or Fake?

God I wish I lived in the London-in-your-head! You don't get much change from a fiver for a rubbish bit of bread with manky tomatoes and rancid cheese and a crap cup of coffee in the real one...

Londoners - Are you Real or Fake?

faker than all of you put together, though I would probably not attempt to get away with claiming to know anything about the following 'city things': drugs (I had some once, tho, they were quite nice), violence (eek! run away!), slang (apart from what my students tell me), the seething...
