latin-jazz piano-led dance music -- where to begin?

my fave of this genre is Joe Bataan's version of "The Bottle"...more latin than disco, even though it appeared on the Salsoul imprint...

An open letter to Simon Reynold on his 'Brit Pop box' critique

Buick's a good rouser of rabble...he's always pissing somebody off so he must be doing something right!

An open letter to Simon Reynold on his 'Brit Pop box' critique

yeah, for one thing the initial post didn't start with a "Dear Simon,"...nor did it end with a "sincerely", or "warmest regards,"...

    Japan / Sylvian

Tin Drum really um, obscured the glammy stuff that came before it...which is too bad...I mean, how about the snarling euphoria of "Automatic Gun"?...or the teutonic boogie of "Adolescent Sex"?

1000 albums to hear before you die in The Guardian

nice list, those Detroit songs...pretty amazing legacy...you'd be hard-pressed to pick another US city with as diverse a heritage as that... the young Bob Seger looks uncannily like Ariel Pink!

    Newish House/Techno LP's I should own

while we're on Parrish, I thought the Three Chairs thing he did a couple years back with Kenny "Moodymann" Dixon Jr. and Rick Wilhite was wrongly ignored...stuff is dark, spiritual, hypnotic and (paradoxically) fresh as spring rain...

    fighting

I got into my one and only fight when I was about 15 or so...some other guy (well, kid...we both were) tried to wind me up, and my friends were all "you gonna take that from him"?, so I said "you and me, hallway, NOW...(this was in Music Class, where all the great fights broke out)...he clearly...

    Idm

someone, somewhere, long ago (maybe even somebody that posts here?) wrote something that resonates with me to this day (although clearly not enough for me to remember their name) about the distinction between "stupid" and "stoopid"...(the former being ignorant/meaningless/inconsequential, the...

    Hoax records

wasn't an LP recently released that purported to be lost recordings from some hallowed NYC recording studio of vintage late-80's rap?...with the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Marley Marl, EPMD, etc...and then was "outed" as something that was cobbled together in 2003?...help me out folks, I know I...

    Ecm

ECM is like the 4AD of jazz labels...which is to say it is an imprint with a domineering figurehead (ECM: Manfred Eicher, 4AD: Ivo Watts-Russell), which employs an extremely consistent cover art aesthetic (ECM: Barbara Wojirsch, 4AD: Vaughn Oliver) that is as celebrated as the music itself (and...

    Greatest opening lines in literature

this is the only one I can remember, so it must be good (or I must be a hopeless dullard): "A screaming comes across the sky".

How many hours do you sleep a night?

I'm a sleep hog, usually getting 9 or so hours a night...(I run about 10 miles a day on the average, and need this much sleep to sustain myself)...anything less than 8 seems like an all-nighter to me now...

admitting you were wrong: music you used to like and now hate

all that ambient dub stuff from the mid-90's (Drum Club, Full Moon Scientist, Reload, Higher Intelligence Agency, Banco Da Gaia, Loop Guru, Bandulu, etc.), seemed so cool at the time...(I can't say I hate it now, just can no longer find what made it appealing)...

    peculiar yet great moments

the new Iron & Wine LP: indie/alt.country act takes cues from King Tubby...not talking pastiche... Kelley Polar - "My Beauty In The Moon": classically-trained cellist does electronic dance music inspired by barbershop vocal-harmonizing...ridiculous yet sublime...
