    The God / Dawkins Delusion

Let me guess. AOL's survey question went something like this... LHC: Scientific progress or like the Tower of Babel, too risky? Edit: Speaking vaguely of math and science: How much fun is calculus? It's the first math that's made intuitive sense to me... I even read about some mathematician...

But males experience anger; that means it isn't really an emotion. At least, it's not like the other wimpy ones that women admit to having. [Male thinking is the definition of rationality, in the common usage, and so, (see how this works?) what men think is always more rational than what women...

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

Yeah, there's this really strange tendency in religious apologists to make an argument against atheism/freethinking that goes like this: Atheists (which is almost always shorthand for scientists or methodological naturalists) can't ever be Spock, because they're human. Humans all have emotions...

Either you're coming off peyote or .... I don't even know how to respond to this.

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

I used to have great discussions about this with a friend of mine who I think recently finished a PhD in AI. Basically, to play devil's advocate, because I don't really believe this, I said- if intelligence seems to be something that isn't algorithmic (which he actually believes, iirc!), then...

Pointless But It Makes Me Chuckle to Myself

Any real fetishist knows that if you're going to do self-bondage, you should use an alarm system of some kind, and/or everything should be rigged so a single yank will loosen the bonds. This thread reminds me of... every summer camp I ever went to. Everyone talked about doing this stuff but I...

Pointless But It Makes Me Chuckle to Myself

There was a big craze like this in the American media about autoerotic asphyxiation. Some 10 or 12-year-old boy hanged himself on his bedpost accidentally (or so everyone assumes) using his belt, and other kids claimed he used to play the "choking game" with them. Suddenly, there's a crimewave...

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

I'm not saying it's noble, or that only scientists know the truth. Buddhists are pretty good with it. I'm just saying. Making up stories about a perfect parent in the sky is infantile.

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

Narcissists love religion. It makes them feel special, like they're an important part of very important goings on- like God Itself is shining a light directly on them. Since narcissists like the idea of ideal love, but have no interest in actually experiencing mutual or reciprocal love, God is...

Pointless But It Does My Head In

Burger Kings' fries are better. So are Wendys' for that matter. I had a boss once who would send us out to get lunch and make us stop at different fast food places to get the best fries here, the best burgers there, etc. I haven't had a donut since I had a job.

Pointless But It Does My Head In

yeah, I can't believe people eat cereal with milk, ever, but especially not in the morning. That's not food, it's more like air with gross dairy products on it. Sweets in the morning are just heinous. But then I think McDonalds' #3 is the best breakfast in the world, so ... (My BMI is 17 so I...

Does it matter if species become extinct?

Padraig, some people reading your post would accuse you of being a strong adaptationist. But you'd be in good company with Dennett and some others. Anyway, I think it's all one big process. And I think it's going to correct for our presence and problems, probably sooner rather than later...

    Exes and friendships

At least in the past, people didn't pretend that marriage was about love. Nobody really expected or believed that relationships with the opposite sex were going to be the most amazing and fulfilling experience there would be in life. People generally acknowledged that sex could happen with or...

    Exes and friendships

Oh, here's a good one: I like it when you break it off with someone, after enduring what seems like a neverending onslaught of their abuse and controlling behavior, only to have them try to spin it like they are the one dumping you, and this was their sinister plan all along- they are some sort...

    Being unemployed...

Nah, if he interviews well, that should work just fine. If he doesn't, they won't bother calling the reference. Believe me I know plenty of people who did this about once every 3 or 4 months when they'd get fired. I'm sort of unemployed on purpose right now... but once I was unemployed with no...

    Exes and friendships

Mwahaha... yeah when they talk about it it's like: Does. Not. Compute. I'm in a bad mood because my brothers getting married and it's costing me a small fortune. Plus I have to be in the wedding party AND go to a "bachelorette" party tomorrow plus TWO SHOWERS. The whole thing is a...

    Exes and friendships

Yeah, I was thinking while reading through some of these comments- if nobody could manage to speak and be friends and live amicably with people whom they had fucked in the past, then my circle of friends basically wouldn't exist.

    Exes and friendships

One of mine wrote me and told me he's getting married a while ago. We're not really "friends"- he lives in Cambridge, MA and I lost his number a long time ago- but it was nice, I was happy for him. As long as he's far away from me and happily with someone else we get along just fine.
