Thomas Pynchon - Against the Day

Worth re-reading, some of those early Pratchett novels I reckon - there's plenty of good stuff I missed as a teenager.

Thomas Pynchon - Against the Day

The only other thing I've read apart from Pynchon that does that sort of "teaching by steath" is Umberto Eco - Name of the Rose taught me more than I thought I needed to know about medieval European religion. EDIT: Although I think Terry Pratchett does it quite well in very small doses, I have...

    rolling methamphetamine thread

And it's a lot more fun. It's much more euphoric than regular amphetamine, closer to MDMA (Note - YMMV) Ahem... drug geekery - the hydrochloride salts smokeability is peculiar to methamphetamine - hydrochloride salts of other drugs are not necessarily smokeable. It's all to do with the...

    Poppy oneupmanship

Flicking on the news yesterday, I saw the Queen at Remembrance Sunday wearing what looked like 5 poppies stuck together. What's that all about? Do any other public figures wear more than one? Or are they not allowed to upstage Her Majesty? And is it just me or do politicians, newsreaders etc...

if you was designing a new drug

The ether thing in Ireland is pretty interesting - wasn't there a priest who expounded on the virtues of ether over alcohol (less violence etc)?

if you was designing a new drug

You can't really anymore, as far as I know - it used to be offered for sale by grey-market chemical vendors in the early '00s, but they've all disappeared, or gone underground I think. Because of it's unusual legal status there's nothing to stop you getting a lab to knock you up a bunch...

if you was designing a new drug

For me DMT has only ever been like a mushroom trip compressed into 10 minutes, but then I find it very hard on my lungs to smoke much - I certainly don't think I've had a "breakthrough" experience. Bear in mind that almost all DMT is extracted from plant material, and so varies in content. For...

Does it matter if species become extinct?

Ah Nomad... we both love Heidegger and exotic drugs. Why don't we just get married? ;)

if you was designing a new drug

Don't you get the usual psychedelic side effects? Dry mouth, tendancy to giggle, mild memory impairment - that sort of thing Low doses of DMT produce a definite, pleasant "high" before the visuals kick in. And high doses can be quite anxiety provoking as your ego frays around the edges..

if you was designing a new drug

There's a short sc-fi story about designer drugs that let you see the world in the style of different painters, which start out at nice soft impressionist stuff and move onto the "harder" cubism etc... I can't remember for the life of me who it's by though.

if you was designing a new drug

That has loads of other effects tho - euphoria, body high, mood alteration, and (at high enough dosage) dissociation. Diisopropyl-tryptamine, DIPT: http://www.erowid.org/library/books_online/tihkal/tihkal04.shtml Although subsequent anecdotal evidence suggests it's not only audio, although...

Does it matter if species become extinct?

This is just regression though - ecosystems, if they fail, will be replaced by new ecosystems. It might take a long time, but why does one ecosystem have greater value than another? Most of the time these judgements about ecosystems are strictly from a human point of view - i.e. destroyed...

    Dalston/Hackney/Stokey news

What - animal fats are the best for chips - lard, goose fat or duck fat make the tastiest chips. Sogginess is due to wrong temp/frying time.
