    what are you reading now?

Actually, I picked it up yesterday. And packed it into a box to be moved to yet another house where it will sit on the shelf and I won't get round to reading it. See also Underworld by Don DeLillo (nobody gets past chapter one).

    what are you reading now?

quite. If the navel gazing is going to be that protracted, I want some conclusions, not American Dream angst and whining

Are you feeling the recession (yet)?

fuck yeh, for my sins I worked in market research and I got made redundant (along with dozens of others) in Feb 09. Whilst in hospital waiting to see if they'd amputate my leg or not :( MR is one of the first "industries" (ahem) to go under at times like this, when companies realise that they...

    rep your ends.

i'll have to find that. :D Although I think it's a bit hard on Calabria. Bits of it are gorgeous, but it is (or was) very insular and oppressive.

    rep your ends.

it was well gangsta. Literally - i was in the furthest south village on the mainland and there were a LOT of deeply stereotypical mobsters about all the time. This was mid-80s when Calabria was very, erm, "unreconstructed" :D

    what are you reading now?

i managed to get into a standup row with a pompous fuck in an Oxford bookshop who claimed that Brautigsan's books were out of print because they were dated, whimsical nonsense. My favourite is The Abortion.

    Zombie Dance Routines?

i'm making a movie for the tent I'm running at a festival this year - just backdrop stuff, mostly dancing, performers, hot rods and the like (all ripped from downloaded movies or my own collection). I'm convinced there must be a decent zombie dance routine out there somewhere but I'm drawing a...

    rep your ends.

Born and lived in Poole till 17 or so. Then a few months in Southern Italy. Back to Bournemouth, Oxford for 2 years then north London for 18 months in the late 80s (ugh). The Brixton environs for about 20 years but next month move to Northumberland, Riding Mill in fact. Or rather, Riding KILL

so which bbc radio station would you like to see go?

i presume by "core music" you mean the kind of indie / alt stuff they play in the week / daytime. Fair enough, but most daytime radio anywhere is the weakest part of its output. 6Music comes into its own in the evening and at weekends (Sundays especially - Stuart Maconie's Freakzone is pretty...

    Vinyl Curiosities

i've got some 5" singles Sympathy For The Record Industry put out - El Vez, Man Or Astroman?, that sort of thing. Even with short tracks, the quality is pish, but then it's garage rock so it doesn't matter a whole lot :D

    what you currently enjoying ?

I've discovered Black Carrot (thanks, Maconie) - very late I'm sure, but it's wonderful sort of funky krautrocky Beefheart stuff. Been checking out Phosphorescent's back catalogue - kind of cosmic country but not the way Gram meant, I guess. Very extended and spacy and almost like a...

so which bbc radio station would you like to see go?

6Music is saved (announced this morning on Laverne's show). I barely listen to it in the daytime (or even that much in the week). But Sundays are essential. So I'm dead happy.

One Track/Song - Before You Die

In The Ghetto is laid on a bit thick, and somehow I feel like I can sense Presley's reluctance about singing it (although that's probably being wise after the event). At my father's funeral we had American Trilogy, Suspicious Minds and Just Can't Help Believin' (the loonnggg live version with...

One Track/Song - Before You Die

actually, no - fuck it. For glorious chutzpah, absurdity, style, catchiness and all-round insurmountable genius, it's this.

One Track/Song - Before You Die

the first bit of Heatwave, before the chorus. Most glorious start to a record ever, let down by a really weak chorus.
