    Pretentious Crap

I'd be keen to hear what you've been reading as well. The lecture you posted up mentions Marshall Sahlins and the Leakeys - what else has been on your radar?

    Metal Machine Music

Yeah - but if you're standing in the record section of Sears in 1978 and you've got a copy of Boston's second album in one hand and Transformer in the other, which one is more likely to be mind-blowing? I mean, yes, we owe him props because more quality material was not available. Absolutely...

    The accents thread

The guy who gives the talk that Zhao posted up in his Worst Mistake thread has that eh-ew thing going on in spades, if you're interested.

    Dissensus Cassette Swap - Unplugged

Yes, I'm in California. I'm surprised it hasn't arrived - the USPS seems pretty reliable. I made a copy, so I'll fling that in the post as well and one of them's sure to get there!

    Radio of the pirate variety

The rules are really different in the USA, so don't take the following as gospel, but... http://www.nfcb.org/projects/lpfm/index.html and http://www.freeradio.org/ will give you some pointers. Be careful!

    Nanotube Speakers

To get good low-end you still need to shift large amounts of air, and you can't do that with a small diaphragm like the one in the video, for example. You'd still need subs, I guess. The most obvious application for this stuff is to make really durable and sensitive electrostatic/ribbon type...

    The accents thread

Living in California with a New Zealand accent has been surprisingly difficult. I have to repeat my one-syllable name a lot and automated phone systems don't understand me at all. I have to put on my best American accent just to get the thing to recognise me. I have relatively flat vowels and...

    Nanotube Speakers

This is pretty exciting. It will probably be even more exciting in ten years' time when the tech becomes commercially viable. How will new speakers look? Or not look, more to the point. I can see this being extremely useful for making speakers disappear...

    USB/firewire -> PCMCIA converters?

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

Oh - George Benson and Oscar Peterson both scat/sing along while they play. George follows his guitar solos pretty much note-for-note! Maybe they added it in later...

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

Coz you used to hide your contraband liquor in the legs of your capacious boots, as a smuggler/piratical type. The term came to be applied to any kind of contraband, including illegal copies of records. That's the usual explanation. Seems a bit pat, though...

    Clothes

If the label says it's OK, wash them on the gentlest cycle with Lux flakes (or whatever they call soap flakes these days). Make sure you dissolve the flakes in some warm water before you add them to the machine. If you've got the time, your woolen clothes will last much longer if they're...

    Managing studio acoustics

I'd use bits of wood to lift them if necessary. Glue them to the desk with UK equiv. of No More Nails if you can! The idea is to prevent the transmission of vibration from your monitors to your desk. You can do this a number of different ways. As long as your monitors are isolated, you can put...

    Managing studio acoustics

Yeah, definitely. I kind of thought that stands were a bit snake-oily, until I got a pair. Depending on how tall you are, you'll probably be OK with pads instead of stands. Have a look at the Auralex Mopad, then find some hard dense foam and make 'em yourself. Or you can buy them for US$40.
