    Funky/London/UK House

Tune ID? Female vocal, spoken word bit in the middle where she compares herself to the London Eye... what is it? And what does she say about that landmark?

    Disco!

Disconaut Some great tracks on this thread. As part of the Association of Autonomous Astronauts, I used to sometimes DJ as Neil Disconaut playing mainly space-themed disco and funk, but there were a couple of tracks mentioned earlier which I didn't pick up on (e.g. thanks to whoever linked to...

    Bill 696

I've posted on this before at my blog. The actual Met Police form is here. There doesn't seem to be a reference to the ethnicity of the crowd (maybe they've modified it because of the row) but there's some code in there, e.g. the types of music they give as examples are bashment, r'n'b and garage!

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

There's also a book that went with that series which I have somewhere, I will check if there's anything worth scanning in.

    warfare songs

Thinking some more on the Irish side, there is the whole Republican Flute Band tradition - instrumentals not songs clearly, but with the whole band thing is quite militaristic with uniforms etc. I have this pet theory that there's a link between the flute band sound (both republican and...

    warfare songs

In terms of Irish republicanism, the hardcore would be The Irish Brigade, mainly cassette only releases in the 80s/early 90s. Songs include My Little Armalite and Sam Missiles in the Sky (the latter a rewrite of Ghost rider in the sky fantasing about the IRA using ground to air missiles).

    New African music

I recenlty posted something about the excellent Township Funk by DJ Mugava (which is now everywhere). In reply somebody recommended checking out Tanzanian/Kenyan/Ugandan Takeu -does anybody know much about it - this track is apparently an example: DUDUBAYA FT UNIQUE SISTERS - RUKA RUKA...

THE POGUES - the cases for and against

Do you remember 'Acid Folk' by Perplexer, mid-1990s bagpipe sampling techno - admittedly Scottish rather than Irish pipes, but it makes a good case for the prosecution.

on the London FM dial ?

Here's a summary I did at Transpontine (my South Londonist site) of pirates picked up in New Cross that day: - Metrolove (92.2 fm) - soul, r'nb, hip hop, ragga - back on air despite being raided recently. According to this week's Mercury (13/8), it had been broadcasting from a garage behind the...

THE POGUES - the cases for and against

I think what made the Pogues a great band was not just Shane but the number of really good lyricists and musicians involved. Thousands are sailing, which Zhao quoted, was written by Philip Chevron who was in Dublin punk band The Radiators from Space. The Fairytale of New York was co-written by...

    GROOVERIDER - what happened?

Funny, only last night I started working on a Free Grooverider post, thinking that he was being forgotten, now I have changed the name of the post to Grooverider Free, which is great.

    Talk Talk

Well some of us who work for English city councils like to think we still cut a fine figure of proletarian dandyism.

    Jazz funk

Is it time to reclaim Level 42? They were actually fairly sound, supported Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the midst of the Thatcherite 80s. Mark King's fashion sense might have been a bit Miami Vice but his bass playing was very very funky, when I was in the anarcho-punk scene some of my...

    bankruptcy of 'nuum as concept

Tactical genius of Reynolds to throw in the EuroCore Nuum when people are tying themselves in knots about the post-hardcore 'Nuum - guy should be a chess player. See there never was only one 'Nuum. But where did the EuroCore Nuum start? I think it all goes back to Italo-disco feeding into...

Dead music legends: Ronnie Drew (Dubliners), Jerry Wexler,

Too many music legends dying off this week to have a new thread for all of them so can I just mention: Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners Isaac Hayes (I know he's had a thread) and Jerry Wexler None of these in the centre of the Dissensus playlist maybe, but note that Wexler, when asked what he...

    bankruptcy of 'nuum as concept

Coming late to this discussion, my take is that Simon Reynolds has never, to my knowledge claimed that the 'Nuum notion is an explanation of everything or that the hardcore-jungle-grime etc. continuum is the only continuum at work. It is pretty clear to me that this continuum does exist in the...

    cycling to work in London

when I first saw the title of this thread I thought is said 'crying to work in London', something I often feel like doing.

    Capitalism, Marxism and Related Matters

Well I think the first chapter of Capital shows how the music industry's attempt to keep the value of music at its previous levels is doomed. Basically Marx has a concept of socially necessary labour, the average amount of labour needed to produce a commodity. Once the amount of socially...

    Lost K-Punk Junglist Text Online

I agree, I think maybe we tended to overload some of the music of that time with almost apocalyptic expecations. The world carried on regardless.

    London Classics 1991-NOW

London Acid City: OK maybe not the most innovative tune ever, but very much the soundtrack of mid-90s London squat parties and Reclaim the Streets.
