Bizarre SP*M email titles and content

I look through my spam every day, as quite a few genuine emails end up there. I often think someone should be doing a chart of cultural trends - spam as the darkside of the collective unconscious. It all comes down to: 1. your dick is too small. 2. you can have lots of money for nothing. 3. you...

    Lost K-Punk Junglist Text Online

...well not so much lost as not previously available on line as far as I can see. 'Black Noise' by Mark Fisher from ***Collapse magazine 1995. http://history-is-made-at-night.blogspot.com/2008/07/collapse-magazine-black-noise-by-mark.html

    Origins of Goth

I believe the term goth in relation to post-punk bands was first used in relation to Luton band UK Decay in Sounds in 1981: http://www.ukdecay.co.uk/pressSoundsGoth1.htm I'm not sure whether you'd count Luton as the North (well it's north of Watford). I've written about my ,mid-80s semi-goth...

    Funky/London/UK House

Club Red Shooting Sad to hear about somebody being shot dead outside the Fordshouse party at Club Red (Limehouse) at the weekened. The London Paper reported that it was a 'funky soulful house' night. Wonder if the police have been following recent dancefloor trends and will add funky house to...

    emo bashing in Mexico

By the way checked out your life without dead times site, must say it made my day to see a situ-referencing project in Luton, haven't lived there for a long time but had lots of anarcho-punk adventures there. In respect of the current discussion I notice you are putting on gigs at the George in...

    emo bashing in Mexico

Agreed. I posted something very basic about Sophie Lancaster on my site and Ive been quite disturbed by some of the comments along the lines of 'chav bastards they're all the same' - which I thought followed the logic of the killers in some way, i.e they're not in my gang therefore less than human.

All I want to listen to right now is...

No, but I did see them last night at the Brixton Academy (supporting Alabama 3 at Love Music Hate Racism gig). Still very sprightly, in a greybeard style.

All I want to listen to right now is...

The Nuggets album, especially I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night by the Electric Prunes. I have a few tracks on my Ipod but its not the same as having the whole double album on vinyl in my hands - my copy last seen when 'lent' to some Luton punk ne'erdowell many years ago.

    New Joy Division Documentary

, Answering my own query I've now tracked down this quote. It comes from something called the Manchester Civic Prayer, which goes: “Grant us, O God, a vision of our City, fair as she might be; a city of justice, where none shall prey on others; a city of plenty, where poverty shall cease to...

    owning your web presence/history?

I once asked for a post of mine to be deleted from a (weird pagan) discussion board because I accidentally posted it with my real name on it. Didn't particularly want people at work to google and then start making probably wholly accurate assumptions about me. It's still up there now, and even...

    Rock Against Racism '08

I went along for a bit - made me think I was too young for the first RAR festival in Vcitoria Park and too old for the new one as lots of 14 year olds ran around watching The View. I thought as a musical event it didn't really work, the sound was really quiet even close to the main stage. Some...

    New Joy Division Documentary

Saw this tonight and thought it was good, nicely complementing Control (have reviewed it here). Anybody else seen it yet? There's a quote at the beginning which I would love to track down - its a voiceover, possibly from a 40s/50s movie going on about the City ('the city of peace' etc.). Anyone...

    Dinner Party Music

My heart generally sinks if I go round somebody's house to eat and they are playing jazz. To me it shouts of trying too hard to let everyone know it's a Dinner Party with capital D and P. I would be inclined to throw together an Ipod mix of everything that isn't too noisy and shouty - could even...

    The Waterboys

On Irish fiddle-dee-dee nothing can beat Planxty, though I prefer the original line up stuff (Cold Blow and the Rainy Night & The Well Below the Valley) to Words and Music. Compared with this I always found the Waterboys a bit portentous and over-stated, but I love 'Fisherman's Blues', and 'And...

    Africans in Grime

Back on the grime tip, I know that Afrikan Boy is hardly typical (since he has made his Afircan identity his u.s.p.) Interesting though that on his blog he makes a big deal of name checking other Nigerian musicians as well as usual grime suspects: 'Afrikanboy aka YOUNG SUNNY ADE was born the...

    emo bashing in Mexico

Seemingly there have been similar incidents in Chile: http://www.nme.com/news/various-artists/35463 I think there is a difference between: - inter-subcultural conflict (mods and rockers for instance) which is nasty but often self-dramatised, relatively equally matched and with implicit limits...

    Africans in Grime

This is a great bit of footage of Spike Jonze hanging out at Afrikan Boy's flat in Woolwich: http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1150622763 I've posted about it at Transpontine
