Is hiphop a form of post-punk?

cheers, all i'd ever been able to read out about this before was that kool herc was jamaican and the implication was always that therefore hiphop must be influenced by reggae, but never going into it in any depth. i'll check out that chang book.

Is hiphop a form of post-punk?

hiphop had been around for a good few years before planet rock came out, the kraftwerk influence on hiphop was just a flash in the pan, and does reggae really have much of an influence over hiphop? i think if it did it would be more apparent, there'd be more reggae samples used, more lyrical...

sonic youth are old and boring

have you ever listened to emo, or sonic youth? i think rather ripped is a dreadful, dreadful record, it may as well be the fucking killers or whoever. i'm a dedicated fan too, everything up to and including murray street was sublime. some of their solo projects are still amazing though, like...

Observer Music Monthly the 50 greatest music books ever

they should of included joe carducci's book as that's the best writing on rock that i've ever read. greil marcus is a twat, and didn't that Our Band Could Be Your Life book get written off by all the bands azzerad wrote about?

Is hiphop a form of post-punk?

well some of those people were just interlopers who were never accepted by the hiphop world (basquiat, haring) whereas others you only really read about there connection to hiphop when reading about it from an outside perspective (blondie) so i'm doubtful of how much of an impact they had, some...

seeing grime live is almost always disappointing

i've only been to one grime show (roll deep) and it was probably the worst performance from a headline act i've ever seen, and i've been to hundreds of gigs over the years. i don't understand how a group that can totally destroy on the radio can be such rank amateurs when it comes to getting on...

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

if grime is going to crossover with rock then they should try doing something with a band lightning bolt whose own music at least has a kind of grimeyness to it

Why is it called GRIME and not UK RAP?

Absolutely, and i think genres should be defined more by spirit, attitude and mood than particular sonic qualities. However I think that the sonic qualities of grime and certain types of hiphop aren't that different.

Why is it called GRIME and not UK RAP?

yeah i agree with the sentiment of grime being the real uk hiphop. grime just draws on this country's recent musicsal past just the same way (american) hiphop draws on american music history and i think this is partly why traditional uk hiphop has never really taken off, you can rap in an...

    Guest vocalists v intra-group interaction

i think guest vocalists are generally not good, more often than not you get a generic female vocalist or a known performer contributing a by the numbers vocal track for cash. if those guys had any sincerity in the collaboration i think it would result in more than just one track, it usually...
