hard 80s hip-hop....

there is something extremely rhythmically effed about the cold crush brothers tune when the horns are in. which i like. top billin must be the hardest though. <param...

thanks luka! you're right, that's what the condition's usually there for isn't it, though i have been on the wrong end of it before. sometimes clubs do have pretentions and want people who fit the 'image'. parachute remix is hard!

    Birmingham bassline/UKB

i'm sure you're right to some extent! i put on quite a lot of the djs in london a while ago but the inspiration to do it kind of dwindled, until recently. the response was always pretty good though.

good point, 'no effort' could hardly be a criticism there. off to go shopping, probably pick up a monocle and a pocket watch as well.

    Birmingham bassline/UKB

oh, ok, the way i interpreted what i heard is that is was more garagey meaning 2 steppy because of the beats mainly, didn't realise it was supposed to be more song based. to be honest it's a while since i heard any bassline that thrilled me apart from birmingham stuff for some reason.

er does anyone know the date of that event at if? or am i just being dumb and missing it? i don't mind putting on my clarks for that, it's the 'no effort no entry' bit that always worries me, bit of a subjective criterion if you ask me.

    Birmingham bassline/UKB

does anybody know much about the birmingham bassline scene then? i know i like dj pantha! i would heartily recommend you download some mixes from his myspace blog. (though you'll have to copy and paste cos myspace is so waste.) i'm only up to 23 (!) but 24 and 25 are downloading...

    house and techno are bad

this thread is mental. i think one stylistic choice couldn't be futher from the issue of whether or not something is good. it's like saying that the 7th interval is the devil's interval and that any music featuring a chord with two notes 7 semitones apart should be consigned to hell. try...

i need love is a beauty. but i think energy, time stamp and squark (though maybe not for the anti-student crowd ;)) are all really good as well.

    Funky/London/UK House

he has basically said he sees himself creating a bridge with dubstep audiences etc., providing a showcase rather than preaching to the converted. given the kind of music he makes and the kind of bookings he always gets, it makes sense as well. i'm not sure he deserves too much criticism for...

    playing smaller venues

good point! having said all that, a lot of the time i'd rather have a (genuinely) quiet pint. always been suspicious of this idea that music has to be 'enjoyed' everywhere at all times. if someone is properly putting on a bit of a party (as opposed to supplying a 'soundtrack' as if it was a...

    playing smaller venues

ok, bad start i admit, but of course i don't need to point out that not being conscientiously po-faced all the time isn't the same as being on a wind-up. i thought i was just making some empirical observations actually, to underline the existing point that there's a range of situations that...

    DJ Premierrrrr!!!!

i always thought jeru's static was really good as well. is it fair to suggest that these tracks represent a more sensible alternative to listening to trip hop?

thank you! i enjoyed listening to this on the radio a lot.

    playing smaller venues

nice one! i got taken to see orchestre polyrhythmo de cotonou recently. didn't like it enough not to go home after a couple of songs. to be fair though, i'd already seen something completely satisfying, and the venue was the barbican, presumably not really right. the organisers and the some of...

don't think i haven't looked on here enough to know what you're talking about, matey. i'm not having it! even if i didn't think you were wrong in your tacit assumption that, as some have suggested, hardcore etc. isn't best, i would still entirely decline to agree. when you start aspiring to...

Where were you when vinyl died?

i think really this is all about whether you want to relate to music as an object or in the abstract. it's not just the practicalities in themselves, it's the difference between having a synergy of sound and thing or not. at one end of the spectrum, vinyl is surely ultimate. wasn't there...

bloody hell zhao, you really are an alien aren't you :) where i come from (not london though admittedly SE england) there is a very simple answer to the question, which is: hardcore and uk garage. i am merely here with the information that on our planet, everybody (except the renegade...
