I'm a big fan of first one; 'The Bird with the Crystal Plumage', 'Tenebrae', 'Deep Red' (maybe his best overall?), the first half of 'Suspiria', 'Opera' and also 'Phenomena' although I'll warn you that's not generally considered one his best - but to me it is like a fever dream with pure...
The difference between Cannibal Holocaust - which is, as described, very nasty but also pointed and angry and also possibly hypocritically - and Cannibal Ferox is quite marked for ostensibly similar films... Ferox is more fun I think I would say but far less powerful or disturbing... Holocaust...
It's a while since I've seen it but I think the hair colour is just a trick of the light...
You might like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 although it is a different take on the southern gothic thing - didn't see it mentioned much in Dennis Hopper's obituary though...
Why the hate for Requiem...
Glad you like I Spit On Your Grave - it's not for everyone but its much better than its reputation I think...
Not sure if Irreversible or Requiem are horror to be honest - Irreversible is a rape/revenge though and they often get included... A friend reckons Fire Walk with Me should be in the...
Thanks... The Dead Zone and Don't Look Know should both be in my list I reckon... Not sure about Paperhouse although it is pretty interesting and The Wicker Man I loved on my first watch as it seemed so strange but now I'm not so sure... also do Irreversible and Requiem for a Dream count? - I...
No problem - all this talk has got me quite keen on filling some gaps in watching so The Haunting and The Innocents are both on the list... I'll be interested to know what you reckon about Salo and Vampyr... good luck...
Not that it matters much but I'm with you on The Shining - but I also haven't seen it for many years...
Calvaire is bizarre Deliverance-style Belgium piece starting Laurent Lucas as the crooner victom... It's got a touch of the The League of Gentleman about and is very well made... Also...
I thought it was decent but far too anglophone in its coverage. No mention of German pre-sound work, only one mention of Mario Bava, nothing on Argento although he used the music from Suspira, etc. Far too much time on 'The Omen' as well and no mention of Wes Craven, surely a key touchstone of...
One more I've just thought of:
Black Tight Killers - Sort of like a Suzuki Seijun film but not quite so out there - has some excellent girl assassins attacking with LP records if I remember correctly...
I'm no expert and can't do ten but here are two Seijun Suzuki films that definitely amongst are best/strangest/best looking:
Branded to Kill - Rice-cooker fetish killer in black and white masterpiece.
Tokyo Drifter - We will need/want a powder blue suit after this one...
On the strangest tip...
Great film - up there with Solaris for me... I saw this at the ICA assuming, as a midland's yokel, that the said venue was a bastion of learned film appreciation. I sat there with my girlfriend eating my clown-shaped marshmallow lollipop - as I said we were yokels out in 'the smoke' enjoying...
I saw 'Enter the Void' last night - it really is a technical tour de force... it's also slightly overlong and some of the acting is a bit dodgy... it's not as harsh as his last two either but it will still annoy/upset lots of people I think... glad I saw it though...
