    this radiohead thing then.

I can't begrudge Radiohead's belatedly discovering electronica etc. and trying to revolutionise their stadium indie with it, though I don't find it particularly engrossing. I'd applaud them in fact for such a brave move, if it weren't for what I've seen of them on Glasto TV etc. which reveals...

    Boozeless cold remedies

Close the windows/extractors and keep a saucepan of water simmering on the cooker - sounds horrible, making your living space all hot, steamy and damp. A more moderate option would be to drape a towel over your head & over a bowl of boiling water, leaning over it to inhale all that lovely steam.

that's it... except that this "bridge" is actually the last bar of the verse, which cuts off after 2 beats thus giving the chorus that unexpected feeling, unlike a regular bridge which happens after the end of the verse. Edit - thanks to hint's youtube link below, actually the chorus has a...

@ Gabriel: :p oh yes it is! - isn't it? If you keep the 1-2-3-4- counting from the verse, then what you're saying is pedantically true, but I still think/feel that the "Up" establishes an unexpected new time - 'PON DE ONE-BEAT, GETME? ;) so "up" and "in" fall on the 1. Forgetting the...

kode 9 or someone needs to coax PP away from her folk-soul duets with Dr Robert and back to that Ike & Tina/Altern8/KLF madness!

Thinking more about the original question about the reggae skank emphasis - 1-AND-2-AND-3-AND-4-AND - that presumably came about as a calypsoed-up jazz rhythm, where a banjo originally strummed on that same AND-beat (I read somewhere that late 50's/ early 60's ska was a Jamaican version of...

I don't think so - it seems like that if you're counting from the end of the verse, but the word "Up" I think is really on the 1-beat, it's just that it comes in unexpectedly early i.e. the last bar of the verse has only 2 beats instead of 4. I think. :slanted: ;)

I don't think it really speeds up to double-time (as in k-s-k-s- with everyone playing along frantically where they were previously grooving along for two beats k-s-), but fair enough if that's how it feels to you - whatever it's doing, it's great  (and I hadn't noticed before that the...

    Ect

New experimental variations on ECT: "For some, the experimental therapies have had astonishing results: Patients with Tourette syndrome abruptly stop having tics, and depressed people snap back to life. Despite these promising results, doctors admit that much of what works—and what doesn't, and...

Just listened to a clip of this on Amazon - the chorus come in on beat 3 of the verse's last bar instead of waiting for the next 1 - a nice trick to make it pop in unexpectedly ahead of schedule, and establish a new downbeat. Led Zep's Black Dog is a track I'd like to analyze to see how it...

that's what I've always understood by swing - from jazz to hip hop and electro to UKG - triplets, or somewhere in between the 3 and 4 division.

    favorite musical moments in film.

I'd second/third Rebekah Del Rio's "Llorando" (acapella Spanish version of Crying by Roy Orbison) in the Club Silencio scene from Mulholland Drive - maybe the best in a long list of Lynch's music-enhanced scenes - sound design and use of music for all his movies is amazing. This scene in...

Yeah, the bass drum usually falls on the 1-beat, which makes it easier to hear/feel. I'd say "yes", "yes (although even if there's not kick drum on the 1-beat, the 1-beat is still there, in time - see below)" and "probably". Also reggae sometimes leaves out a strong beat on the 1 and hits...

With only the drum track playing you might not be able to tell where the bars start (and this can be exploited by producers - opening a track with a rhythm part on an off-beat, only to wrong-foot you when the music or beat proper comes in), but you can always tell with a full musical track -...
