Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

I adore Morvern Callar. There's a good thread about the director and the rest of her work in a thread here. As far as recommendations go, today I would put forward Rize . Its a documentary by David LaChapelle about a dance style called Krumping (kidz wearing make-up dancing crazily to hip-hop...

    Grime (lack of) Distribution

Theres a big reggae scene out here for sure. Follwing that, theres a huge techno and house crowd. Some very dedicated clubbers and some good nights (Ive seen Jeff Mills and Thomas Andersson in the last few months and Ewan Pearson coming up next week!). Not heard any Grime being played, but the...

    Grime (lack of) Distribution

Cheers, thats an interesting read. I'm out in Fukuoka, which is partly an advantage and part disadvantage. Being far from Tokyo the place is a bit slow moving, but at the same time its easy to get to know a huge proportion of people in the club and music scene. Will try and speak to some...

    Grime (lack of) Distribution

Its a tough job indeed. I tried to do a bit of local Grime distribution up north last year, but hit all sorts of problems. I generally have no idea about this kind of thing, but buckets of enthusiam for it. Actually thinking of getting hold of some stuff to distribute around Japan over the next...

Breezeblock Dubstep Warz on Radio 1

On a side note it seems dubstep is spreading its way through the BBC. Anyone hear Gilles P drop some Free Jazz over an untitled Skream track on Radio One, Sunday night? Thats a big sound. Its kind of a big step for the scene too, although whether you think its in the right direction is another...

What do you do for a quid?

Student scum here I'm afraid. Its a good life and I'm studying japanese so at least I'm not wasting my time on a mickey mouse degree. No idea what to do afterwards though.

    Kong

For such a long film its characters really were paper thin. Infact there are so many things I disliked about this film I don't even know where to start. The main problem is the hype that surrounds it. In terms of artistic value, I would put it on a level with something like Mr &Mrs Smith, but...

    Top 20 albums of 2005..?

Here we go then... Malcolm Middleton - Into The Woods L.Pierre - Touchpool Arab Strap - The Last Romance All these records are from the Arab Strap camp (Aiden Moffat aka L.Pierre being one half and Malcolm Middleton being the other) and make up at least 3 of my favorite records of the year...

    Jeff Mills First Contact cd

Mentioned this one in the Jeff Mills thread the other week, certainly an ambitious project. He's written some really interesting things about the Contact Special on his blog which you can find here. I particularly like this extract when he's talking about the performance of Contact live in...

    Jeff Mills

He`s recently had a residency at Womb in Tokyo and done some shows around Japan. Its a project called Contact with short films and music about alien abduction... sounds a bit wank on paper, but it actually made for a good night out. Havent heard the accompanying CD yet, but hopefully be picking...

    Maximo Park

Back to the original topic. However much critisism these current NME darlings (I'm thinking Franz, Maximo, Bloc Party, The Libertines etc), I envy the 'kidz' these days. The NME, MTV, Radio 1 and the like are all important ways for young people to first come into contact with music that makes...

    Japan?

ive only been out here for 2 weeks, but managed to get down to a Gilles Peterson show the other night. It was 25quid in (steep!), but with 2 free drinks. lasted til 4 in the morning although the atmosphere was a bit wierd (lots of moshing?!). Seems to be a fair amount going on here - In terms of...

    Japan?

Where abouts are you gonna be based? Im out in Fukuoka studying Japanese at the moment. Small for a Japanese city, but a really good place. If you think of anything you wanna know before you come out here then just ask away...

    OUR THING - Leeds - 20th Sep - MAC 10, PURPLE & MORE

Sounds like a great line-up, unfortunately I won't be around, as I'm travelling to Japan for the year... here's hoping the night is still going September 2006! Goodluck with it mate.

    Lynne Ramsay

I found that the R2 DVD of Ratcatcher lists "short films" as a special feature, so that might be worth having a look at. It doesn't actually specify which short films it contains though... (only £6.99 over at play.com!).

    Lynne Ramsay

Morvern Callar ranks as one of my favourite films. What's so great about it is the sense of atmosphere, particularly in the club scene. I remember reading an interview with Lynne Ramsay about it, saying how she felt most club scenes didn't really represent the true feeling of being in a club...

My Bloody Valentine: Part 1: What happened?

He's credited with producing and mixing bits and pieces from the album XTRMNTR. Once you know that you can kind of recognise the barrage of sound style production he contributes. Seems to be something that bands such as M83 have taken to a new level, but that's for another thread.
