Pointless But It Does My Head In

Idiotic device design such as: When I turn on the TV, it automatically goes onto standby, so I then have to press another button with the remote (which I have almost always mislaid somewhere). Surely if I turn a TV on, it should go ON? Who decided that it would be more convenient to force me...

320 Mp3 vs. Wav vs. FLAC

Yeah but what if you want to play your music in itunes or something else that doesn't use flac? FLAC is a minority format, like ogg and although I have absolutely no proof this (so excuse me if I'm saying something stupid), but it doesn't seem as future-proofed as other formats like mp3 or...

320 Mp3 vs. Wav vs. FLAC

I would tend to stick with mp3 or wav personally. You might want to listen to those files on a Walkman type thing and FLAC isn't supported by a lot of devices. With wavs you still have the choice to change them later if you want

Pointless But It Does My Head In

Sodcasting I wonder if this has come up before, but sodcasting really really does my head in. I can kind of deal with it when it's teenagers on the bus, but more and more often I'm seeing people in their 30s indulging in this selfish, self-absorbed behaviour. There's a cafe down my road...

Songs with children's choirs in them

Isn't there a bit on 'Berlin' by Lou Reed where there's children crying? Does that count?

    The belated R Kelly thread...

this is amazing, particularly the last 20 seconds or so. Is R Kelly really unaware of how absurd he is? If he is aware, it's the most finely pitched act I've ever seen. His lyrics were always a little over the top, but in recent years he seems to have really gone for broke. Can anyone...

    The belated R Kelly thread...

worth checking out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapped_in_the_Closet as it summarises all the plots from all the Trapped In The Closet Episodes. Also, it gives you cliffhanger lines from each episode. Hence my new signature:

    The belated R Kelly thread...

Karaoke R Kelly has done some wicked tunes - couple I remember back in the day were Vibe and Bump N Grind. Did Bump N Grind at a karaoke recently, it brings the house down (the acapella beginning is so stupendous). Of course it's impossible to do without a bit of dutch courage first (or some...

    black roots - white fruits

The funny thing is as well is that Parrish is very selective with his musical history. Did none of the original black techno artists have any white European influence? I remember reading something that Simon Reynolds wrote about this - the obvious pointers are the Derrick May description of...

    Worst Film You've Ever Seen

I think Magnolia is totally-overrated, if not completely awful. The whole 'isn't this world amazing and cosmic?' type shtick grates really quickly, and doesn't really explain anything about anything. It was just a bunch of soap operas with raining frogs at the end. Tom Cruise was great in that...

    Vinyl bass?

I know there's low-pass filters for digital sound at the top end (anti-aliasing filters). But I'm not sure about filters at the bottom end. Surely as all the sounds in dubstep are electronic it doesn't matter if CD is used. The filters have already filtered out frequencies because it's...

    Vinyl bass?

Very true, but that all depends on how the music is recorded/mixed in the first place too. If the digital waveform is clipping before it's mastered(I remember reading somewhere that Dr Dre makes a lot of his snare drum sounds clip on purpose), then dynamically the record is already affected...

Pointless But It Does My Head In

Tube chat Another thing that does my head in: On the tube in London today, I was on the escalator, walking down the left-hand side (as is the required protocol) when someone else on the right hand side further down, moved from the right hand side to the left hand side to stand in the same...

    Vinyl bass?

Recently been listening to a lot of dubstep, and since I have a working record deck again, have been buying lots on vinyl. Now to be honest, the only reason I buy it on vinyl is because I like the whole tactile thing with vinyl and music, and the end product. Given the choice over downloading...
