    Grime in a pincer movement.

I have to agree with with Woebot in claiming that Dubstep sounds more 'polished' than Grime. Perhaps 'classy', 'polished' and 'professional' are not exactly the right terms but there is is a qualitative difference between the two that could be expressed in similar terms. I think in some ways...

    Roll Deep : 'Me'

I'm far from an expert, but it doesn't sound like either Indian or Chinese. Unless I'm way off, I'm pretty sure that's a Middle Eastern sample. The scale sounds Arabic and the string arrangement too.

    Demon

I love that Ghetto Kyote vocal! Easily my favourite. Shame I've never found any version other than that one from the mixtape. Hey, what is that catch-phrase of Demon's where he says something like "Dave Mills! Dave Mills!"? I could never figure that out.

    Wiley's eski-œuvre

Essential Direct, the distributors, have a decent collection of Wiley tunes that they've carried over the years still listed in the catalogue. Far from complete, but it's a good way to get catalogue numbers for anyone looking to compile a discography. www.essentialdirect.co.uk

    Demon

Can't*forget "Gangsta Toyz" by Big E-D feat. Demon & Kano. Demon blows me away for his ability to sound completely possessed and manic on that track.

    Strictly for the Vancouver Massive

Right right right, I remember now. I knew some guys who used to do a Italo Disco night there. Haven't been there myself, but I'm up for checking it out. I'm going to reconnect with the women I know at Lick in the Lotus Hotel where I did a night for a while last year. We get along well and...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

Glad I'm getting a good first response to the graph idea, I hope this means I'll have tonnes of replies when I start calling for data! This observation about the 25bpm initial shift makes a lot of sense. It explains how tracks at the speed of Mr. Kirk's Nightmare (125 bpm) in 1991 could have...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

SS's Black is a notable exception at 183bpm, as is Fire at 176bpm but they are the exceptions that prove the rule. I'm working in making a graph (geekery!) charting the progression of tempo across Hardcore, Jungle and Garage and the shift seems pretty consistent. If anyone's interested in...

Ah house parties! Gonna have to give this some thought, I kinda need the damage deposit back. :) Do we have any ideas about whether we could pack a party with friends? I know I could throw some emails around and pull a few folks, what about the rest of ya'll?

Indeed! Maximum respect to everyone for betting that I probably wasn't an axe murderer and coming out last night! I've spent my day seriously recharged on the Grime, due in no small measure to Chimpy's amazing server of merkery. Re. renting a projector and watching DVDs, I'm in. Boy howdy...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

Kid? You shouldn't! The fetishism of technical perfection is the death knell of a great many musics. Listening to people talk a blue streak about Andy C because he's technically brilliant ("Flawless mixing!") makes me feel terrible! This is long standing beef for me with a lot of discourse...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

First off, it's great to see this thread developing in so many different ways. I've been working my head around how to make a defense of recent d&b for some time, but I'm not ready to post on it quite yet. This comes as a long overdue response to the dismissal of post '97 d&b that I've...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

They certainly may have, but the fact is that tempos did not jump 10 BPM overnight, they show a pretty steady increase in speed over the years consistent with the +8 adjustment. What's crucial here, I think, is not that some DJs may have altered their decks, but rather that the 1200 is a...

    The Big Hello Thread

Add one more to the role call... Brokeman from Vancouver, Canada. Happy to have finally found a spot where I can comment on posts by all the folks who's blogs I've followed over the years. Also a little bit intimidated by the prospect of having to say something... hmm. I'm a musician of...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

Contrary to what you might think, this is not going to be another "has it all gotten too fast?" thread. Rather I'm interested in hearing people's views on the <i>formal</i> qualities of tempo change in Jungle. I've held a pretty functionalist view for a while that the shift of Jungle from the...

Whatever form the function takes, it's going to be dependant on CDs! From what I've gathered from everyone and certainly from my own collection, we're a bit short on wax. ;) I've been a junglist for quite a while and while I started buying dubstep and garage around 2000, it always took a back...

How to run an Underground Record Shop

I'd certainly never argue in favour of rejecting so-called rich suburban teenagers. My shop depended to a large extent on large numbers of "uncool" patrons; be they suburban Progressive House fans, stringy haired Prog-Rock fans, or the ubiquitous 15 year old buying Dark Side of the Moon. My...
