Can you be a DJ and not own a label or make music?

I think you're reading too much into it - comes up quite often on Dissensus, I think, this kind of second-guessing peoples' motivations in music. DJs start labels because they think they'll be good at it. If they didn't think they were good at picking tracks people might like, they wouldn't be...

Can you be a DJ and not own a label or make music?

TIM WESTWOOD, BABY (does one production credit for London Posse nearly 25 years ago count?) There are plenty of DJs out there making a living without releasing tunes or running labels. They just don't get written about or hyped. They're the ones holding down residencies in places that you'd...

    The Bristol Sound

Cheers! I was just listening to a bunch of my V Recordings, Dope Dragon & Full Cycle stuff. I'll hopefully get round to doing a mix at some point. That's some of my favourite music - very distinctive sound choices. Their drums always seemed to be a bit more clipped and "funky" (for want of a...

The instrumental to the Fresh 4 track - "Smoke Filled Thoughts" formed the basis for the drums on Metalheadz Terminator, didn't it?

Young L is next level with his beats. He should be a bigger deal than he is. Greg Enemy: Kipp Stone: Irv Da Phenom: This is ok but loses its way after the first minute or so:

    Where are the breaks?

It was originally "Nu Skool Breaks", wasn't it? The early days of Adam Freeland playing d'n'b records at 33rpm. Ils and Tipper on Fuel. Rennie Pilgrim and TCR. That earlier stuff was certainly more "breaky" than some of the stuff being referred to here I think, and is around the period where I...

    Where are the breaks?

It was never really cool because it was polished and trancey before all the cool kids decided that being polished and trancey was a good thing after listening to lots of 00's R'n'B.

    Where are the breaks?

I thought breakbeats were coming back? Skream's chopped jungle throwbacks at 140. Stuff like Greenmoney's "Tropical Step": http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF1699594-02-01-02.mp3 Although I'm not really sure what you're referring to with the "kick on the 1 and 3, snare on the 2 and 4" part with...

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

Yes - this is my understanding, when it's used in d'n'b. Otherwise it's just normal mixing, isn't it?

    Funky/London/UK House

In my experience, it has much more immediate appeal than UKG. In the sense that Funky stuff gets a better reaction than UKG stuff amongst crowds outside the scene / bubble / country, even in places where UKG doesn't go down well at all.

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

It's usually used to describe playing 2 d'n'b tracks on top of each other, after the drops on each. So instead of mixing in the intro of track 2 and then cutting across when the bassline or breakdown comes in, you hold both tracks in the mix for ages and have both basslines playing at once for...

    James Blake

Describing Cassie as pop genius in the era of Gaga and Robyn seems a bit peculiar. Back when RnB was really ruling pop Cassie's stuff wouldn't have touched the best, let alone now. How did that ultra clumsy "Thinking I was spoken for / Not any more" line in Official Girl make it out there into...
