Most true to the spirit of Reggae/Dub Reggae and NOT from Jamaica

in terms of space and echo and the feeling of a presence through absence i think this stuff comes close. jamaican vocal groups like the mighty diamonds and early wailers took a ton from doo wop and r&b also ofc. i am a huge reggae fan and these are two of the most beautiful songs every recorded...

    The Meaning of Japan

the quote on my copy of spring snow is like this. this novel is as delicate as a sushi roll...as stoic as a samurai warrior...as complex and multifaceted as the shin megami tensei series of videogames...

i'm reading pale fire. it's alright. i really liked lolita but this one feels too much like it's trying to impress me. it's like being forced to eat a whole birthday cake. before it i read the fifth head of cerberus which did the same unreliable narrator thing in a much less ostentatious way...

    Beats

ginsberg is not someone i would defend from his detractors but a supermarket in california will always be one of my favorite poems. gary snyder's translations of han shan are also very important to me and led me to pound etc. to me the beats are great when they're a conduit for a more...

this ones good. will in the world is also one of the best historical bios i've ever read, it really makes the period feel vibrant and real. i was a big nerd about that stuff in high school/college, i really wanted to go drinking in london w shakespeare and chistopher marlowe and whatnot. i even...

HHhH is great. Right when the self awareness starts to get annoying it disappears and you’re left with just the story which is incredibly compelling and doubly so because you know how difficult it was to right. Also lots to ponder re narrative history, historiography etc

    CYBERPUNK

i hate the version of cyberpunk its gone with. blade runner is great bc its all analog and suffused with loneliness and melancholia. it still works bc now it plays as sort of an elegy for a future we've been denied in favor of something loud and garish and shitty. 2077 just looks loud and garish...

why is ambient so popular now

dunno how the dance music lifers here feel about it but the 90s ambient stuff like the orb and klf's chill out is interesting in that its good background music but also is very playful and sort of narrative driven with all the samples and whatnot, something that feels like a pure relic of the...
