    RIUASA Panel in NYC

vivien goldman also made some remarks about going to "blues" parties, which she described as being precursors to raves -- all-night parties run by brits of carribean descent i know woebot's interested in the whole "paths to rave" question, the prequel to "generation ecstasy," so to speak. one...

    RIUASA Panel in NYC

i went, but had to scratch and claw to get in evidently you had to have an advance ticket, but as i don't have a credit card (primarily b/c i don't trust myself, secondarily for philosophical reasons), i had no such ticket resorted to two tactics to get in first, i told the doorman that he...

    the Change of Heart Thread

they've done a lot of records, and i can't claim to have heard more than a hanfdul . . . . but i'd have to say i rate them fairly highly especially their remix of "watch them come!" by men from the nile aka roy davis, jr i can see why dissensus people would, in general, not like jazzanova --...

    Shock Ecstasy Revelation

what i find very troubling is that the price of ecstasy in the u.s. has held steady at $20 to $25 a pill from 1990 to the present day (unless you buy in bulk) -- and perhaps peaked at $30 in 98/99 whereas in the uk the price has fallen from, say, 12 to 15 pounds in 1992 to 50 pence today how...

    Smoking Ban

what about garbage collectors, people who work w/ known toxins, etc -- how does the law work here? presumably if the risk is unknown, they can make a claim against employer. but if the risk is known to the worker, and the employer takes reasonable measures, is there a viable claim??? i ask b/c...

    Smoking Ban

i suspect that the health risks of second-hand smoke are way over-stated moreover, even if second-hand smoke did pose a substantial health risk, what about all the other pollutants that people are exposed to on a daily basis? therefore, you have to ask what *motivates* the smoking bans (1)...

    Smoking Ban

i'm totally opposed to the smoking bans -- and i only smoke socially i actually have an entire (err, half-baked) theory on this subject but i think that smoking has all kinds of cultural meanings -- and very much belongs to the night, to the culture of the night (and of modernity) health is...

Setting up a club night in London

OR if there is something going on there, but it's not my thing, then i feel like a tourist, a feckless transient, etc i.e., there's plenty of rock'n'roll places in w'burg, but they're not my thing -- or else the crowds are too young = see sputnik

Setting up a club night in London

it's a much costlier proposition (and for most people unrealistic), but i think the winning formula is to open up your own small club (large bar) and have a different theme each night -- helps to have live bands and PA's too could possibly be done if you were to investigate spaces just outside...

    Indie Rock or wot?!?

speaking for myself only . . . . (1) i don't like what i've heard of the arctic monkeys -- a bit too sober and ponderous and straight for me (2) the bands i mentioned up above nobody else here seems to like anyway -- probably too glam and style-over-substance-like -- so i was probably wise not...

    Indie Rock or wot?!?

i'm not exactly sure what people mean by "indie," so . . . . bands that i have mentioned here numerous times = kudu -- nyc brazilian girls -- nyc -- their new stuff has a lot more edge than first album ladytron -- liverpool -- hardly unknowns, but i love their stuff so i'll keep endorsing em...
