    venetian snares- black sabbath

I like Jahba's version of War Pigs. But Dormouse's is good too. they are killer on the dancefloor. Of course the original is great, but it's good to be able to drop (either remix really) into a breakcore set and have the drums be monstrous and mixable.

    Movado

Not sure there is one. Jamaican-style, spelling is improvisatory Seen it spelled multiple times on his own promo material, plus flyers posters, etc. Go with the statistics maybe? Or folks I hear say it say "Mavado"

    rasta and catholicism

I went to a street party in Jamaica right before Easter. It was in bobo dread territory, and people kept shouting "burn batty-boy jesus!" and "burn the pope!" I had picked up on the anti-christian strain - I had heard folk talk about christianity as a slave religion (and an enslavers religion)-...

    NYC record shop recommendations..

Rock & Soul (mentioned above) has a big dancehall collection, or did on the corner of Essex street and maybe Rivington, or so, in the Lower East Side, is a used record shop with tons of old hip-hop and dancehall 12" singles and such. In Brooklyn: Beat Street, on the Fulton Mall (which is...

Have you ever heard something so good it made you cry?

I doubt I'll be hearing "Go to hell" in a yogurt ad (but you never know, I can't believe that her voice can be used that way), that's one I teared up to most recently. it's the lyrics, but also something she does with them, something in her voice..

Have you ever heard something so good it made you cry?

Nina Simone. I can't stand it when cafes and bars use her as background music, because I can't not listen to her and her voice pretty much kills me every time. Otis Redding, on occasion. and yes, the Abyssinians, especially "Leggo Beast" - something about the harmonies and shifting tones does...

    Dubucation

All these suggestions are good A lesser-known, I think, older dub album that is lovely is Well Charged: Vital Dub by Revolutionaries. And of course Augustus Pablo, pretty much anything he did I like And France has one of the greatest dub groups of the 90s and 00s (for a non-historical take)...

    The Cramps

I quite enjoy the Cramps, but it was only after getting over the disappointment of my initial expectations, based purely on association and visuals. All the scariest looking people (to my 14-year-old self) had Cramps T-shirts, and I figured the music must be really scary and crazy. When I...

Soul Jazz Presents Rumble In The Jungle

Woh... Undercover Elephant is Hellfish? as in Hellfish and Producer? As in the best ever dubstept-int-breakcore tune (with the best name): Gnomes Tinker With Time? I love that stuff! I had no idea!

Soul Jazz Presents Rumble In The Jungle

heh. Can I just say, as an American, that the idea that that song is commercial is totally mindboggling. (I get it, knowing how Jungle happened in England. it just never happened here like that)

most unpleasant lyrical slang in the world...EVER?

it's clear the "in college for a degree in business management" students are already here. "don't you bother me by pointing out true things about lyrics I apparently enjoy" if you can't handle people simply describing the lyrics as they are, then you need to get a grip. But I don't see why you...

    downloading music

no, that is absolutely not what I am saying, in any way. If an artist literally loses money off every sale, because of how their record contract worked out, you are literally costing the artist money whenever you buy a record. Don't know how to make that any clearer. they do not receive...
