    Pan's Labyrinth

Has anyone seen this film yet? It's a story set in Spain, around the time of Franco and is basically about some young girl who lives in a strange fairy-tale fantasy world. So far, so-so, but it's the crazy imagery which has attracted my attention. The style is heavily based on Goya, and very...

    Racism in the US

Argh, yes! The whole media and government obession with communities drives me crazy. Take for example the cringeworthy speech John Reid made to Muslim "community leaders" back in September 2006.... Where is this mythical, monolithic "Muslim community" based?! The way the term is tossed...

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

Just tracked this one down and it's an interesting bit of Grime. I've heard JME and Skepta make some references to their Nigerian heritage, but as you say this is probably a first for actually being MC-ed in a Nigerian accent (and there's actually some Yoruba slang thrown in there too).

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

Any opinions on Derkhead or Tropical, the new Boy Betta Know releases? I've been listening to them this morning (torture getting them yesterday, on no music day!) and I'm pretty impressed. Derkhead is pretty much back-to-back boy better know classics. I'm really enjoying the way JME re-works...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

I saw Red Road yesterday night. My hopes were high, not really because of any reviews, but just because of the intruiging trailer and concept. Set around the Red Road tower blocks in Glasgow, a CCTV operator basically stalks someone with a connection to her past, through the CCTV cameras. She...

    Racism in the US

Very sad. Strangely my Dad has experienced two events very similar to this whilst visiting the United States over the last ten years. Personally I've only been to NYC and Houston TX and seen no such problems, but it's a facet of racism I'm personally not aware of even existing here in the UK...

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

I've heard Skepta over dubstep, and there was that Rinse show with Wiley over Kode9, but I haven't heard sets with Riko. Is there audio of him out there? For me, Dubstep at its most "pure" is also the most boring. Still, there seems to be enough variety out there at the moment to ensure that...

BROKEN BEAT - breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

The new Wunmi record is pretty hot too. Hardly what I would call Broken Beat, but she did do that wicked Zombie track with BITA. Traditional crunchy Broken seems to have died a bit of a death sadly :(

That's some scary dedication man... If I was to get a music related tattoo, it would probably just be the flamable logo from Massive Attack's Blue Lines. I'm obvioulsy just not scene enough.

    Channel U Exposed

The BBC are non-profit and hence they don't need money to act as "bait." For them it would be seen as a way of helping young artists get the exposure they need. Running an operation like this must costs peanuts to an organisation like the BBC - although perhaps the content of the videos and...

    Channel U Exposed

Interesting stuff. This is a very different view of Channel U than that which was shown in the Dazed & Confused article about the channel a few months back. I'm not at home at the moment so can't dig out my copy, but fair to say it was fairly positive and on about the indepedent underground...

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

Having an opinion of Grime music is one thing, and in that regard I agree that many on the board could be more open. However, I think the very point of this discussion is that it isn't about Grime. Fair play, if you're across the otherside of the world, but know about what's happening on street...

    UKG vs UKG vs UKG

Very interesting thread. This forum could prove to be a real time capsule. Would this be a good place to ask for some links to some good pre-grime/eski/sublow garage mixes? While I was aware of the scene at the time, it was only through the chart stuff, and the tail end of 2step (MJ Cole's 2nd...

    Toshio Iwai’s (Elektroplankton) "Tenori-On"

It's a wicked a little instrument isn't it :) Shame it hasn't gone on sale at all, as I'd love to get hold of one.

What pre-jungle hardkore sounds should i check out?

These are wicked. Cheers! All of this stuff is pretty eye-opening to me, as I was about 6 when all this was dropping. The similarity it has to what can still be heard on a nightly basis on the pirates around Birmingham is uncanny really.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

I saw this new film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait today. Basically they follow Zidane around for 90 minutes of a Real Madrid game, kind of like Player Cam, taken to the extreme. It's proper up close and personal and very interesting. It's the idea of the 21st Century Portrait that really...

    Magazines/blogs we DO like.

Stool Pigeon's amazing for a free publication. The sheer amount of text in there is staggering compared to other "proper" magazines. If Simon hadn't had enough praise already, I'd add to the good words about it happens for a reason... As for my own contribution I'd like to nominate 20 Jazz...

Topic 2: Amy Winehouse- Inform The American

I'd quite like to hear that cover if it's possible... I got hold of the new album a couple of days ago and it's actually not that bad. It sets a different mood to the first, which takes a little while to adjust to, but as a whole it works pretty well. There aren't any massive stand-outs like...

    the hardcore continuum

Have you listened to The Roots of Dubstep? Check out that or United Vibes own Dubstep history mix and you might change your mind. There's piles of Dubstep that has an obvious 2-step connection. I don't think anyone's trying to say there aren't any influences on Dubstep outside of those from the...
